When it comes to software development, desktop and the related tools are the only reliable choice available right now. Microsoft is planning to change it and they are already working on some projects on it. ZDNet today reported about some of those projects. Video clip from a July 17 “Future of Software Engineering Symposium” shows a former MS employee revealing that Microsoft is already asking its developers to write in the cloud, not on the desktop.

Here is some info on the related projects from Microsoft,

CloudDev – bring all of the positive network effects afforded by cloud computing to the practice of software development at Microsoft. Provides cloud-based build, test, and analytics services to product groups across Microsoft. The first short-term objective is to shorten the continuous integration cycle time – the minimum time required for a typical source code change to move from check-in to compiled and unit tested binary.

CodeMine – provide the right data, at the right time, in the right context for making engineering decisions. Building a Software Analytics Platform for Collecting and Analyzing Engineering Process Data at Microsoft.

    What’s Cloud-Computing?
Just writing on a server some lines of cod and hit “F5″ ?

I believe that Cloud-Computing must be something ubiquitous.
If I know C I should be able to use that cloud no?
Same with Pascal, Java, Basic, C#… .Net, …SQL…Python.

I should be able to use existing Projects/Solutions from different IDE’s and Code/Classes/Functions/Libraries to create/compile it in the cloud…

THIS is the cloud I see in 10 years to use…
The code should be compact, easy to translate from one language to another. From one OS to another, from one IDE to another…

Without those kind of features… Cloud Computing it’s just a server and text file.
