Microsoft Office 15 To Have ‘Touch Mode’ For Better Touch Interaction

Microsoft Office 15 which is expected to launch later this year along with Windows 8 will come with a mode called “Touch Mode” according to Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet. The “Touch Mode” in Office 15 is a button placed next to quick access toolbar and when enabled will change the Office 15 UI optimized for touch based interactions. Even the Ribbon UI seems to be optimized for touch interactions as you can see in the image above. Microsoft has so far announced only about the Technical Preview of Office 15 which was released to select partners last month. Hope we get more news on this soon !

Looks like it just makes the buttons bigger, which is fine by me, I really cant think I will be editing docs much in touch mode…

I have to admit, I am a bit disappointed that this mode isn’t a “metro” app.  Perhaps there will be a “metro” office version?  Thinking about it a bit more though, it might be a bit too jarring to go from Office desktop to Office metro just to use touch but if this is the route that MS is taking with Office, couldn’t we all have taken it with our own apps but then again, Microsoft Office always was it’s own beast and at least “metro” is consistent for all 3rd party touch apps.
