Microsoft Robotic Butterfly
A Microsoft patent filed on December 31, 2012 became public today. In this patent, Microsoft describes a system in which the mood of a user or group of users are collected based on various bio-sensors such as a heart rate monitor, an electrocardiography monitor, or a galvanic skin response monitor and the microcontroller causes a mood-actuated device to react based on the emotional state of the user. Microsoft has described a robotic butterfly as the mood-actuated device which will include a mechanical component that is configured to react by moving based on the emotional state of the user. This patent idea can be applied to various situations. For example, a robot may start entertaining the user if his/her mood is bad or a robot may perform certain action if the person is in medical emergency and more.

Abstract:

This document describes techniques and apparatuses for implementing a mood-actuated device. In various embodiments, indicators of an emotional state of a user are sensed, and a mood-actuated device is controlled to react based on the emotional state of the user. In some embodiments, the mood-actuated device includes a mechanical component that is configured to react by moving based on the emotional state of the user.
