Microsoft Pulls Another 180: Xbox One Will Function Without Kinect Sensor

Kinect One

Microsoft has managed the pull another 180 with a requirement change related to Kinect and Xbox One. Xbox One console will be able to function without Kinect sensor plugged in.

Xbox One Chief Platform Architect Marc Whitten revealed this during a Q&A at IGN. Whitten said that “like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly used the sensor.”
For privacy conscious consumers, Whitten revealed that you can turn the sensor off in the Xbox One’s system settings.

“When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information,” Whitten said, adding that it’s still in use for IR blasting in this configuration. He added that “entering into a required Kinect experience” with the sensor off will prompt you to enable it before proceeding.

nothing strange … if your kinect were broken, how do you suppose to play?

this isnt a 180, they always said this…

They haven’t really said this, but they have never ben really clear about this either. So technically this is no 180. Also the only true 180 they did was the DRM stuff. Or does everybody find this and the headset that is now included to be groundbreaking?

In any case the Kinect still comes with the XBox. Developers can at least count on the fact that the user will have one. Eventually once compelling games make real use of it, people will have no choice but to turn it on.

Personally, I think they should have three SKUs. One SKU for XB1 and Kinect in the box, one SKU for XB1 only, and another SKU for Kinect only. This will level the pricing with competitors who have theirs at $100 cheaper since they do not bundle their lousy sensor with it.

180? really?….. they always said you could turn it off completely =_=
the only 180, its if they make a Xbox one without kinect, and they arent doing that, andim glad they arent doing that because its good technology and its nice for developers to know they have a kinect 2 in every Xbox one.
but 180?? can people stop making up stuff, when they said like 4 months ago you could turn it off completely? or what… doesnt that sound to you that you dont need kinect to control Xbox one? because to me it does

Like someone said before, its not like Xbox one will stop working only because your kinect breaks. not before, and not now.
so again this is not 180, its just what the said before.
