Microsoft Research Working On Interactive Live Tiles On Windows, Watch The Video Demo Of It

Live tiles are a key part of the Start screen and the modern experience of Windows. They provide up-to-date content and notifications. Live tiles embody the Microsoft design principle of being fast and fluid. Users can see updates and real-time information from their apps all from their Start Screen, enabling them to quickly review new information and engage with apps even before they open the apps.

A tile is an app’s representation on the Start screen and it can be either static or live. A static tile displays the default content, which is generally a full-tile logo image. A live tile, however, can present new and valuable content that invites the user to re-engage with your app. You can implement either a simple badge or live tile notifications to draw in your users.

Even though Live Tiles show dynamic content, you cannot interact with them. Microsoft Research is working on ways to include interactivity to Live Tiles. In the video demo below, they show a huge Live Tiles which has shortcuts to opened Office document files, when you tap the specific file, the file gets opened. There is a large mail app’s Live Tile which shows the list of recent mail, and when you tap the specific mail, it gets opened.

    THIS IS AWESOME!!!

    • Heisenberg

      Widget.

  • cybersaurusrex

That’s really cool. This leaves iOS & Android in the dust!

    • Abdul9

Shhhhh…. Don’t let the Android guys hear you. They’ll try to tell you the interactive tiles are nothing but widgets ;)
On a serious note, if MS is able to implement this feature this year that will be a game changer, provided they don’t mess up Nokia Handset department.

  • cybersaurusrex

Finally a CLOCK on the Start Screen! Woot woot! :)

  • efjay

This is why Microaofts lack of pace is so frustrating, this will probably take years to come, if it ever does. Amazing evolution of the live tile paradigm.

    • cybersaurusrex

I’ve read that they’re also working on Live Tile Cubes (basically, six-sided Live Tiles). The way I understand it is if you swipe left, right, up, or down, you’ll get different information from that app… which is pretty interesting if they can make it work.

Any cube shape in UI is horrible. leave it alone.

        • cybersaurusrex

They don’t look like cubes. They just have six faces to a tile.

        • Drewidian

Anyone remember the HTC cube interface on the Touch Pro?

  • Danny

This is excellent. I agree. They should (un)pinch to expand. Im so sick of apps that use buttons.

  • tom

    I want it, NOW!

    • cybersaurusrex

Exactly. This needs to happen soon. Live Tiles have always had a lot of potential… and Microsoft needs to tap into that (pun intended) as soon as possible.

  • BillyBoy

    Looks absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait.

  • Pookiewood

They’re doing it!! I thought they should’ve done this on WP for Music along time ago. This takes that idea and drives the tiles even further. Nice to see they aren’t giving up on Live tiles! People will come around one they take their blinders off.

  • Vincent Haakmat

Now, this is the kind of stuff I don’t mind paying money for again if it is released with Windows 9

  • hyperthermia

Release this as an update now and bring it to windows phone.

  • IamDefiler

    Slick!

  • ale91g

    Game changer

  • that_guy

I completely mis-read the title to this article. I though it was about a tiles on a Windows watch. Anyway this is still awesome. WP needs this! And Windows 8.

  • Jorge

Finally! Here is a smart developer! Finally live tiles can truly be called live tiles! Keep it up.. Can’t wait to have those apps on my windows 8!

  • Islambek Urazov

OS X, iOS, Linux OS, Chrome OS, Android…Go Home!!! Hahahaha

  • Mike

Take that Android Junk Widgets, finally microsoft reinvented the widgets to its fulfill, go home apple, google

  • WatanaLou

Am I the only one who get tired of seeing MS showing cool coming soon products that takes another year or more to arrive?

  • xxcorpxx

Nicely done! I always wanted my live tiles to bring me directly to what I saw on the tile…
    Bring it!

  • Pulagatha

If there was a little more volume to the information being provided in the headline format I think it would be a little nicer.

  • alexd69

    Totally love it

  • Guest

    wow!

  • Malcolm Clement

Hope they research how to post stuff to their own site…
    Server Error in ‘/’ Application.

  • Darrell

I volunteer to be a beta tester! Okay…just send me the link and I’ll get started! I won’t show anyone ;)
