Microsoft Reverses Course On Xbox One

Don Mattrick has announced that Microsoft will reverse course on some of the DRM requirements on the Xbox One.

  • An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
  • Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console — there will be no regional restrictions.

This is actually bad news for consumers, more on this in an upcoming blog post.  But for those who *only* care about DRM this is a small victory. Xbox 180, Xbox 361, what new nickname do you prefer?

Yooo is this for real? Like real real? Naaa I think I’m dreaming.

    • John

No you are dreaming. I did post back when everybody was crying about this DRM thing that Microsoft soon will reverse it or make some changes for better. So no this is very real and we knew it will coming.
I am not happily keep all my 3 pre-orders. Now I am even more excited and can’t wait for new Xbox One.
I told people if you want to protest do it with not buying it but just don’t go to Sony side and buy their console to protest. Sony PS4 is even worth and they just hide it from people. With this new changes we are all set and guess who is number selling console in Amazon in last 2 days? Xbox One! :)

      • John

By the way I was joking about “You are dreaming” because this is real and you are NOT dreaming.

      • John

Correction: I now happily keep all my 3 pre-orders.

Correction: Sony PS4 is even worse and…
But I have to tell you reversing DRM also meant we lost some cool features about cloud. But I think Microsoft later can always figure it out and find a way to add those feature again.
It was a very cool idea (a little ahead of time) but now that we are back to 360 model we can hope Microsoft bring all those cloud features such as sharing games and etc. in near future with software update in a way that people don’t cry again.

And I cancelled both my preorders immediately, don mattick needs to be fired, this is an absolute outrage… this new Xbox one-80 is trash

    • techieg

And you think Mattrick makes the decisions on any of these? MS is probably gauging feedback/reaction and making their decisions based on that. The other thing they need to reverse is the ability to play current Xbox 360 disks on XB1….if gamers cry loud enough they will have to consider it and Mattrick will be given the script to come read to us.

      • SteveyAyo

Don’t much care, I need someone fired for the bs they pulled today, they took a potentially great console and killed it

        • nohone

          1) we know you have cancelled, you have been spreading this crap all over the net

          2) you need someone fired? It seems you are protesting a bit too much, sounds to me like you are a POS4 fan who is just trying to create more false outrage to drive people to Sony.

          • Hahahahahahaha

            “POS4″ LOL
That’s a good one. I’ll be sure to use it every chance I get.

          • SteveyAyo

Actually I’m trying to create a REAL outrage so we can get the original Xbox one back, which was an actual next gen console … not this bullshit Xbox one-80. I hate the ps4, Bu what Microsoft just did is inexcusable… they say they listen to consumers? Good, I’ve owned 5 WP devices,2 OG Xbox, 4 Xbox 360s, a surface, and countless Windows laptops and pcs. The product that I preordered on the day of e3 was forward thinking and revolutionary in the console space. Microsoft NEEDS to hear that there are intelligent consumers out there who are falling for the bullshit FUD against the Xbox one, and to that end I will continue to speak out against them destroying their console..
You wanna call me a Sony fan, I don’t give a shit my comment history over the last 5 years proves otherwise, I’m one of the only true fans of Microsoft who are trying to get them to stay the course with their original amazing idea.

        • NGM123

          Sony stooge

      • Jimmy_Jangle

Why play 360 discs on a One?
The resell value of a first run 360 is not worth any trade in, surely you’d be better of keeping it for playing 360 games on? I’ve got one in my living room, and one in my bedroom FFS! Larry Hryb did say that you can plug the 360 into the One via HDMI, should be some potential in that at least?

      Man up and order gain

  • Naveenangels

This is the whole damn problem with Microsoft these days….. They are screwing up every single product launch.
Create widespread outrage with the DRM requirements (the idea was great, but it was put forth as if it was a way of policing and that pissed of users).
Screwed up pricing (all the old timers of MSFT need to be fired, you aint the monopoly anymore and there already enough hate against the company without you adding more. It is not correct to abuse your dominant position)
No launch in India, China, Japan.
US first policy for WP, Bing…. no wonder PS4 is already outselling Xbox.

    • nohone

A vast majority of the people who were upset were never going to buy an Xbox One. Just like with the 360/PS3 the Sony fans could not stand that there would be competition for their favorite console, and so they had to claim that the 360 was DOA because of Blu Ray, the Cell (it made the PS3 future proof), the 2 gigabit ethernets (one was cut), the ability to drive two displays at 1080p with the two HDMI out (one was cut, and it cannot do one at 1080p), and on, and on. Now we have the whining about drm, tat it is only for TV and not games (never mind that is what Sony made the PS3 out to be – a multimedia machine), claims that the PS4 is so much more powerful. When the Xbox One was leading on Amazon, it was claimed that Amazon is not a good way of determining who is winning. When the PS4 took the lead, the media was all over it, it was proof that people are rejecting the Xbox, and some poll on Amazon showed that 92%, it was absolute proof that te PS4 in the lead. But when Xbox took back the lead, it is once again ignored and not reliable.

It is like Microsoft vs. Apple, anything to make sure Apple looks better. Apple has 30 million Mac users, that is a wild success. But 100 million copies of Win8 sold? They are for computers sitting on shelves, or maybe all 100 million people downgraded, or maybe Microsoft is committing a felony and lying on their quarterly statements. Anything to make sure that people are discouraged from using anything Microsoft produces

    • nohone

Oh, and there was no US first policy for WP. In fact, WP7 went on sale in many places outside the US a month early, and WP8 weeks before the US. Xbox One will sell in other countries after a delay, but it is not like Japan will pull in big sales, and it is better to divert consoles to where they will sell. It is not as if Sony doesn’t do the same, just a couple months ago they started selling the PS3 in some S. American country, I think it was Brazil.

      • VISU

US First policy is there for most of the MS products… US first might not be there for Product launches… but its sure is there for the Features & services… MS have a very narrow approach for the Market… US vs. Rest of the world… and US always take precedence.. Why can’t there be feature parity across the globe..??

        • tropolite

so what about no regional restrictions? That sounds quite a lot like global to me

          • VISU

There are no regional restriction on Games or console… But its the features that will be enabled on the console… I am in europe and i still can’t search on Bing using voice commands in xbox 360 or Windows phone.. The TV in XB1is a US only feature… Why should i pay more for a console which offers me less…

      • Naveenangels

Don’t get me wrong I am a huge fan; but that doesn’t mean I cannot criticize MSFT. Outside of the USA bing services are not at par with google services, be it search results, maps or local suggestions.
Coming to WP, JFYI I think India is the 2 or 3 largest market for WP (thanks to NOKIA). We don’t have Xbox music services, no local scout, no bing maps (thank god for Here maps), no Find my Phone.
BTW markets like China are where the numbers will come from in the future, it is crucial to make everybody feel included

  • Jdrm03

Consumers win again. Microsoft was dumb thinking they could move the market that still purchases most of their game via retail outlets to an all digital system overnight.
They are even dumber for trying to apply DD policies to physical games.
Microsoft has the right vision to the inevitable all digital future, but their implementation of their vision was just stupid.

  • NGM123

    “Bad news for consumers” LOL
As if prices would ever drop, it was only ever about M and it’s partners making more money.
This is a huge win for the consumers who, you know, just want to play games!
Kudos tho MS for having the balls to back track.

    • SteveyAyo

Idiots like you are the reason well never see a next gen console

      • NGM123

So, because my opinion is different to your, I’m an idiot.

I guess that makes you a complete fuckwit then.for believing that DRM was magically going to be better for h consumer. What a complete moron.
