Microsoft To Open Up Windows RT For More OEMs In January 2013

Microsoft has announced that Windows 8 will be released on October 26th and the new devices running Windows 8 are expected to go on sale from November. Windows RT, Windows for ARM based devices is also expected to be on devices from Oct 26th. However, Microsoft has restricted Windows RT for few OEMs such as Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung, etc,. Other PC OEMs won’t be able to make Windows RT devices as they can do with Windows 8 (x86 version). According to the report from China Times, Dell may join other Windows RT OEMs replacing HP in the list and Microsoft will open Windows RT for other OEMs in January. Acer is expected to release Windows RT device in Q1 2013 and CES will showcase a new wave of Windows RT devices.

    Good to see more OEMs on board.
    This make Windows 8 tablets even more attarctive and powerful because of competition.
    I will wait for Surface with Intel processor anyway. :)

    I’ll assume ARM chip production is ramping up hence the need to limit the number of OEMs initially.
