Microsoft today took the wraps off its next generation Xbox console branded as Xbox One. The new console now features upgraded graphics similar to Sony PS4. You can take a look at the comparison between Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox One in the table above. Both of them feature almost same spec on the main unit. But I think Xbox One wins hands down on the sensor department where the new Kinect with 1080p HD support beats Sony’s sensor.

So basically the same with Sony having a more powerful GPU. I doubt I’m not the only person, besides Tim Sweeney, that is disappointed.

    • Heavenly_King

      More powerful everything.

    • GG002

It’s about finding the perfect balance, but many people won’t understand this unless given parables. Maybe easier to understand in car-terms.

If you give a car a 1000bhp, but the car itself weighs 2000kg, then you have less power per kg than a car with 750bhp weighing a 1000kg. You have to be pretty ignorant (and old fashioned) in today’s tech world to completely ignore everything the world’s been striving for the last decade…. More efficiency!

      • Bugbog

Here’s another: “not to mention the slipstream effect (i.e. voice control, dashboard, Xbox Live/Arcade, TV, etc) that serve to make the Xbox One go even faster!” :)

        • GG002

It goes to show that Microsoft really know a thing or two about software, and by having been into serious hardware (not counting mice etc.) for over a decade now, they have blown way past Sony despite Sony’s number race. Start by making efficient software, and make sure you give it perfectly capable hardware, nothing more, nothing less.

          • Bugbog

            Too true! :)

    • uploaderdisney

Not the same at all. The PS4 has much more bandwidth and it will be much easier to develop for due to the unified architecture. It also has a huge lead in the GPU department 1.84Tflops is way more than 1.2Tflops.

      • ZappyKins

Actually the 30% difference in 1.2 and 1.8 is really slight – probably hardly notable. Would be the similar if Xbox had the requested 2.5Tflops GPU – it’s not a significant difference. And we still don’t know if the latency on the GDDR5 memory will be a problem for Sony. I think both missed the mark on Specs. The next Xbox will be the same as developing for Windows 8/9 so I can’t agree on your conclusion.

        • Bloob

That’s a 50% increase though, latency could be a problem, unless developers embrace data-oriented design as Sony already urged them to do with PS3 ( it’s really a better way to design most things in games ). The unified structure also allows for a more direct access to the RAM, making context switches (and avoiding them) not as big of a deal. Also helps with pushing data to GPU ( as you basically don’t have to ), making passing heavy-duty floating point operations easier and faster.

Most games will still be developed with game developing tools, aka. game engines, and all commercial (and most non) game engines will once again be multiplatform. Microsoft’s advantage there will be miniscule, as will Sony’s, as most devs won’t bother with platform-specific content.

      • TheNet Avenger

“easier to develop for” “unified architecture” “huge lead in GPU”
Um, you have no idea what you are talking about. Here is small example:

        1) Microsoft makes the ‘leading’ development tools, not just in terms of ease of development, but in compiler performance and GPU performance.

        2) Xbox One is a unified architecture; however, you seem to think this means something that is not relevant. Xbox One is NT based with Windows frameworks for gaming with DirectX 11.1 and even OpenGL 4.x available for the EASIEST gaming transition from PCs and even WP devices, all TRULY having a unified ‘OS’ architecture and sister frameworks.
        3) The PS3’s GPU on paper and CPU on paper were ‘faster’ than the Xbox 360. However, the architectural design and OS use of the GPU technology in the Xbox 360 easily surpassed the PS3 in performance due to the newer architectural model that now ALL GPUs are based. The OS usage of the GPU in the Xbox One is once again a generation ahead of the OS usage of the GPU in the PS4.
        4) Why? Research WDM/WDDM technologies, their origin in the Xbox 360 and how the new DMA, BUS, schedulding and shared memory technologies CONTINUE to make the Microsoft OS technologies the FASTEST.
        5) Extra Hint: Like Windows 7/8, the Xbox One has preemptive multitasking and GPU thread management at the core OS level, streamlining not only development, but making assets available faster when needed and the ability to use background rendering and GPGPU operations without locks to the GPU that hinder the rendering pipeline.
For a real world example, Windows 7/8 can juggle multiple games and background GPGPU operations without dropping FPS or inducing UI latency as the OS manages the GPU threading priorities and uses idle fractions of a second to squeeze more processing instead of depending on the game to keep the GPU fully utilized.
        6) The GPU technologies that give the Xbox One an advantage beyond the hardware is technology that ONLY the Windows NT OS model currently provides and the Sony PS4 will NOT BE using. (Again you can see this in use on Windows7/8 or even WP8 where the UI is always using the GPU, effectively making the phone faster with a dual core CPU than even an 8 core S4.)
On Paper the PS3 should have crushed the Xbox 360, in reality, the PS3 plays catch up, even several years later when Sony finally got better multi-core development tools; however, they still fall behind the development tools the Xbox 360 shipped with, let alone what multi-core development and OS technologies Microsoft has available for developers today.
The only way you will the PS4 out performing the Xbox One is a game designed for DX9 instead of DX11, and even then it will be a toss up as the OS GPU scheduling and management technologies still give it an edge of using more of the GPU more often.

        • Turkules

You really don’t have a clue of what you are talking about here. I have done games using these “leading” MS development tools. Sony is focusing on GAMING much more this time than MS and they have approached game developers much better and more closely than ever before. Microsoft has focused so much on that multimedia and social crap that many of the next gen titles for xbox are late over half a year and many have even been CANCELLED! And with such a big leap against the xbox one in graphical processing power, memory bandwhich and with significantly lighter OS (think about that voice and jumping around kinect shit, “3 OS thingy”, all that TV and movie nonsence locking out some cores/ram) Sony has a real stranglehold over MS this time with PS4 according to game development. Period. And btw I have owned every single gaming console since PS1 so far(except Wii U). I also own many “high end” PCs so I would consider myself as neutral and I guarantee you guys that I’m not a fanboy of Playstation. I like the original Xbox and the 360 much more than PSs but this time MS is doing it all wrong :(. With Xbox one you can finally watch TV on your TV…

        • XtraTrstrL

LoL, you speak nonsense. “The only way you will the PS4 out performing the Xbox One is a game designed for DX9 instead of DX11, and even then it will be a toss up…” This makes no sense. All the talk of PS3 being more powerful on paper, but underperforming is also irrelevant in the PS4 vs Xbox One war. PS4 is using a much more programmer-friendly and uses a more known chip this time in AMD.

It’s got the most current HSA capable APU, which will allow amazing things in gaming with how the GPU and CPU will share the 8GB of GDDR5 ram without having to copy info, but instead just handing things directly to each other. Xbox One is actually more complex with its 8GB DDR3 ram using a 32mb eSRAM to make up the bandwidth. Devs will have to intelligently use that eSRAM in their engines, rather than the everything being done in that area for them on PS4. The 1.84 Tflops compared to 1.2 Tflops is a major measuring point of overall power, that can’t be ignored, and 50% difference is far beyond marginal.

And like it’s been said a lot recently, you won’t see multiplatform Xbox One games outdoing PS4 games anymore. Even when it’s the target console for the game, then ported to PS4, it’ll still lookperform as good if not noticeably better. And games optimized to fully exploit the power of the PS4 may have to be tweaked on Xbox One to run smoothly, like tuning the FPS down from 60 to 30. The raw power difference really is that much.

Microsoft is clearly out to try and compete with AppleTV and GoogleTV with the Xbox One, shifting their focus so much from gaming, that their hardware is lagging behind in that aspect. They are treating indies exceptionally horrible this time around, which is why news of f2p and other indie games are popping up nonstop on PS4, and we aren’t even at E3 yet.

  • Heavenly_King

So the PS4 is the most powerful console again. AWESOME!

    • GG002

Look where that got them (with PS3).. Still beaten by Xbox 360 for nearly a decade.

      • John Smith

What are you talking about? The PS3 has sold more units worldwide than the Xbox 360.

        • mike

While they have shipped more units as of the last update in January, this is inevitably going to happen this year.

    • Rolf

      What about CPU Architecture???
Or it is not important if the difference is like 10 to 1?

    • koenshaku

For one the PS3 was not more powerful. Two I hate the dual shock controller. However I will be getting a PS4 this go around this thing looks like a cable box and seems to act like one. I don’t care for things like halo TV what I do care about is my games looking nextgen and having a core gaming console and that is what Sony showed MS showed a media center with gaming functionality its actually sad how much better Sony’s conference was to me oh well I guess we are seeing the effects of J Allard’s absence and the many creative minds that left with him.

      • MSFTmanJosh

Umm? 15 exclusives within one year of the release, more integrated Xbox Live, video record and edit?? Ok no awesome gaming there at all. (shakes head)

        • koenshaku

Paper exclusives as far as I’m concerned they could be puzzle games or xbl arcade games.. I mean i didn’t even buy a ps3 I don’t like Sony i was a fan of Sega they made good first party titles and I saw sony more as a market usurper and i didn’t like their controllers. But you and me both know that conference focused more on multimedia and ms came out with an empty hand with nothing to show from these exclusives when you have to say to be continued you know your event couldn’t hold a stick to sony’s either.

          • MSFTmanJosh

That’s what E3 is for. They know that it is in 19 days so why would they show all of the good games at an hour event that was meant to display the system, semi-explain it, and give some previews of it’s power/tech. E3 will be about the games.

          • koenshaku

Depends on your message Sony showed a ton of games because that is their focus MS showed more of a set top box. which is more of a jack of all trades media center and gaming console.

          • MSFTmanJosh

That’s because Sony is offering any other form of entertainment. MS knows that times have changed and you can’t just count on one form of entertainment when you can have a few others. MS wanted to get the “details” and less exciting other stuff out so E3 can be focused on GAMES

    • http://www.facebook.com/iain.simpson.127 Iain Simpson

that’s kind of saying quad core android phones are faster than dual core windows phones, which we already know is absolute crap.

      • Bloob

So you’re saying Sony’s lightweight, gaming-oriented OS is somehow more of a resource sink than the full W8 kernel? Just no. PS4 is more powerful all around, whether it is a difference that can be noticed ( especially in multi-platform games ) is another matter.

      • John Smith

Except it’s not crap. Every single benchmark available for phones shows the top end WP lagging behind the top end Android phones.

  • judazuk

To bad the GPU, the only really important thing for gaming, is not as good in the xBox as in the PS4 ..

    • TheNet Avenger

People are putting TOO MUCH value in the GPU specs, the OS architecture and the development tools Microsoft offers easily offsets the base differences, in addition to the RAM and asset handling technologies of the OS level GPU scheduler.

In RAW DX9 level gaming performance the GPU in the PS3 is ‘technically’ faster than the DX10/11 based GPU in the Xbox 360. However, as the world has witnessed again and again, the Xbox 360’s GPU handling continues to beat the PS3. (The only scores the PS3 wins graphically are pre-rendered cut scenes.)

Here is another example the GPU in a WP7/WP8 phone is far below the GPU in the iPhone 5 for a higher end Android phone, like a S3/4 or HTC One. However, in graphical performance, WP continues to BEAT these devices, not only in Apps and UI performance, but also in gaming performance. A dual core 1.5ghz Nokia 920 runs circles around the non-WP devices in gaming FPS with the newer titles being released, and this is pure advantages in the OS handling of the GPU, as the native code frameworks are rather similar.

People forget the PS3’s GPU was technically faster and the PS3’s CPU was technically faster, but when added to Sony’s OS and Sony’s development tools and the aged design of the dedicated shader model of the GPU, the PS3 had to surrender performance and graphical quality, using CPU cores at times just to get close to the Xbox 360 graphically.

(Even today, the texture quality and other asset management on the Xbox 360 is easier to develop for and can use much higher quality textures than the PS3 is capable because of how the OS differs in handing RAM and swapping assets and textures in and out of the GPU.)

If anyone thinks Sony is going to best the Xbox One graphically, ease of development or gaming performance, they forget Microsoft IS THE WORLD leader in gaming performance with Windows 7/8 and still makes the fastest compiler and graphical development tools in the world.

      • koenshaku

I have no idea what sort of blind fanboydom you have going on here. For one the xbox 360 ran DX10 nor DX11 they called it DX9+ because of the shared shader architecture which was created for it. The only performance gains the PS4 had was in unshaded physics due to their cell processor with I forget how many SPEs 7 or 8 one of them was a controller it only improved physics and was so difficult to utilize many developers didn’t even bother. The deciding factor for the two consoles was that the 360 had 512mb of unified memory, while Sony as they did with the PS2 was bottlenecked by the anemic video ram they had 256mb of texture ram. Which meant xbox games typically had better looking textures and with their integrated 10mb of fast DRAM they ran circles around Sony in what mattered in DX9 shaders and textures.
As for as the windows phone goes I am clueless about what you are talking about games on WP8 typically graphically intensive games are more buggy and slower than iphone / android counterparts Asphalt, Spiderman and batman were all pretty bad ports in contrast.

        • MSFTmanJosh

You said it, ports. If a game is made for WP it will run amazingly compared to the iPhone or Android

          • NGM123

It’s like how a low spec WP can smoke a high spec android phone in the smoothness and lag areas, because the thing is optimized to work on the OS and it’s not a conflicting lagging mess like many android phones are.

          • tanjiajun34

True but in gaming I think Android is still better.

Take a look for yourself. The iPhone 5 owned the Lumia 920. Even the Android running HTC One S which uses the same cpu and gpu as the Lumia 920 beats has better scores.

        • koenshaku

UI performs better than any other. I wouldn’t say there is any serious bench mark games that show a huge distinction between the devices. Granted I am not a serious phone gamer so if you can show me a game that is really impressive I would like to take a look for myself.

        • TheNet Avenger

I hope you don’t truly believe this benchmark reflects on reality.

Specifically this benchmark, like most ‘cross platform’ benchmarks, uses a set of OpenGL features/calls and then implements the DirectX variations of the OpenGL calls. So it is a DirectX based benchmark that runs by pretending to ‘work like’ OpenGL.

When you can throw higher resolution textures at DirectX or run JIT compiled shaders on DirectX that both create a massive increase in performance and speed even when just dealing with sprites, this type of benchmark won’t be testing for these features as OpenGL cannot do them.

In RAW GPU horsepower, the WP8 device is ‘technically’ behind the iPhone or S4, but in real world gaming with an optimized DirectX based game, it can and will produce results that are NOT POSSIBLE on the OpenGL ES frameworks iOS and Android are using..

Think about the Xbox 360 versus the PS3. The PS3 potentially had 2-3x the CPU horsepower, and the GPU ‘specifications’ were seeing as superior. However, in the end, the PS3 had trouble producing games that were on the same level as the Xbox 360.

The ONLY games that were in on par or faster than the Xbox 360 games were cross platform OpenGL designed games that were ported to DirectX, not using the advantages of DirectX. (And even then, the developers often did take advantage of some of the Xbox 360 DX features to add in higher resolution textures that was NOT possible on the PS3 version.)

you dont know much about game developing no? do you think games will use all the resources available? also… only because it has more numbers it doesnt mean the game will run it better than the other one.

even in Windows pc games, you see some games giving more fps with amd than nvidia and then others “run better” and give more fps with nvidia than amd… and thats with games made for the same OS.

so in this case, 2 different consoles it with 2 diffrent OS, will run different, because the games wont be compiled the same way. so no matter how much numbers does ps4 has in their gpu, you dont know how a game will run when they are available… and how gpu/cpu will handle textures, bump maps, normal maps, or stuff like physics or crowd and ai, or dynamic lights. or well you dont know if an engine is more optimized for Xbox or PS4 operating system, etc, etc… so no matter how greater something seems in numbers still it doesnt tell the whole story.

Actually I have a pretty good idea, sure the games perform better on different cards which is generally due to which card they endorse Nvidia or AMD or if a game uses more tessellation than shaders, if they use more soft shadows, physX and even depending on what kind of AA they will accelerate different based on what the hardware designer feels games should accel at. This of course is a moot point for next gen consoles why? Because they are all made by AMD! Any game developed specifically for the PS4 will run exceptionally better period. Any game made for xbox then ported to PS4 I want to say it will run marginally better and I don’t see why it wouldn’t, however we will see how DX11 on the xbox one translates to openGL on the PS4 later.
I will end this on this note you are running an AMD 6650 GPU with DDR3 then you decide to upgrade to a 6770 GPU with DDR5 and the same processor. You can expect a performance boost right? Its simple that MS decided to include a kinnect at the cost of inferior hardware which was probably a good idea the console will be more acceptable to a larger demographic of people. In fact it will probably be a huge success like its predecessor at the cost of some hardcore gamers like myself which will be going for PS4. Now I have never personally bought a Sony console I have purchased both Xboxes because they were graphically superior and I was a fan of Sega. Sony right now has just showed they are more conservative gaming console whether that makes them end up like Sega remains to be seen.

I think this more powerful argument should be put to rest as the PS3 even with Blu-Ray did not sell better than the 360. Furthermore, the PS4 seems to be a pure gaming environment which some entertainment value. However, as Sony is learning with their handheld devices things are changing very rapid in this space and will be about execution and services.

PS3 has already outsold the Xbox 360. On a worldwide basis it has taken 2nd place, only behind the Wii. Expect an official announcement within the next few months.

      • GG002

        That’s one tiny million, worldwide.

        • John Smith

You think the Xbox 360 being out LONGER but selling LESS is some kind of a victory?

          Fanboi alert.

    • Bugbog

I think from this announcement that it is becoming quite clear that Microsoft is beginning to show the superiority of its Software & Services to provide a better experience for the Xbox console, over that of the PS4!

      • MSFTmanJosh

I couldn’t have said it better myself

    • John Smith

Actually, the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 worldwide.

By a small margin (not milions but hunderd thousands)

I buy consoles based on the games not the specs to me its up to the developer of the game to make it pretty and smooth. If one console is more powerful than the other they develop for the lowest and port and possibly add a level of eye candy to the more powerful unit and generally games are fast enough you wont notice or care for the minor difference. Home 1080P hdtv’s have a 60hz refresh anyhow. This means both consoles are equal in graphics regardless if one can make a few more FPS than another.

So now were left to which is easier to develop for and well Direct X is used in PC’s and been around forever so Im going to bet that the X-Box one is easier to develop on but if you want the maximum game sales you learn to develop for both so again these are equal especially over time.

We can conclude that graphics are equal.

If your into the games now it comes to exclusive titles you cant live without but do the exclusives mean enough to pass on certain features.

The kinect is hit and miss but when done right its a hit I would much prefer to play football calling the play, scramble, and throw the ball than to mash buttons. I might prefer to lean my body to look around the corner in a shooter than to hit a button to do it and for dance games nothing compares to Kinect. Being this is the Kinect we all wanted the first time around but its here now you might be able to learn and do sign language, there is Skype built in if you use Skype and my father in his 80’s can even use Skype.

Both have HDMI. Hard drives are faster than disks.

I dont believe I would care to use the in game recording option but you never know.

Finally we have the HDMI input and exclusive to the NFL additional onscreen stats and chat ability. Now I love football and cant wait to see this feature.

While I havent seen it mentioned there is the projector and and video screen combo for more immersion and I have an aging projector that im looking to replace and combining that with my gaming hdtv.would be awesome. I game a lot on my PC and will only play games with triple screens and know how much more fun this is than a single screen it helps and its more fun its not cheating because I have peripheral vision its what I would use if I were truly in the outside world I wouldn’t limit myself with blinders like a single tv screen does.

My 2 cents you decide for yourself whats important for you and enjoy it both consoles will be a lot of fun.

Boys, we can sit here and go back and forth all damn year about hardware, specs and which system is more powerful and blah blah blah but when you’re playing these games in a couple of months you’re not going to notice a damn differences..seriously. Its over all already..at the end of the day…Sony wins!!! (sorry I had to throw that in there)

  • Gino Rodriguez

I think you all dont know jack and should just wait a month til after the consoles come out to make a decision

  • Torguish

    Easier to develop to?
That’s not what about 23 devs are saying.. :D

  • Protec

All the people talking about Xbox 360 had prettier games are talking complete bullshit. I own both consoles and why is it that if the game is released on both systems, PS3 has prettier version?

  • MadVirus

What this article fails to mention is that Xbox One has dedicated servers that can do calculations, such as physics or advanced AI. As well as giving us massive multiplayer battles, rather than 16vs16.
Kinect 2 in terms of creative potential absolutely blows anything else out of water. I own PS1, PS2, PSP, and nothing from Xbox, so I am not being a fanboy. Concerns have been addressed… their shitty Public Relations dude got fired (thank god).

Playstation 4 hasn’t added ANYTHING new, besides letting another person play for you. So Xbox One is a clear cut winner for me
