Microsoft’s Lionhead studios lay off 10% of workforce as Fable development winds down

Microsoft’s Lionhead Studios are laying off up to 10% of their work force after Fable: The Journey, completed its development.

In a statement to IGN Microsoft said:

“Following the completion of Fable: The Journey the Lionhead studio is in the process of beginning work on its next projects. As is common in the games industry, a reduced headcount is needed as projects kick-off and ramp up as development gets underway. At this time a very small number of positions have been identified as at risk of redundancy and the affected employees were notified today. We are working very closely with those people during this difficult time, to help them explore alternative opportunities within Microsoft including new roles at Microsoft Studios which is actively hiring.”

While Microsoft blames the lay-offs on the cyclical nature of jobs in the game development market, it is of note that Peter Molyneux left the studio earlier this year, and that the game has been met with tepid reviews, with DigitalSpy calling it “a somewhat shallow on-rails experience with lots of repetition.”

Microsoft intends to add 100 new positions in the UK between now and June 2013.
