MineSweeper for Windows RT/ Microsoft Surface finally arrives

Solitaire and Minesweeper are some of the most played games ever, having been included in Windows since version 3.1.

Unfortunately Windows RT shipped without such niceties, but Microsoft has now corrected the issue.

A Windows 8 version did exist, but did not support RT. An update to the app has now added the ability, which is sure to boost Surface sales.

The game is Xbox Live enabled and will offer players daily challenges to complete and offers online leaderboards to compare scores with those from Xbox Live friends.

Find the game in the Windows Store here.

So wait… the Minesweeper and Solitaire games for Windows 8 never worked on Windows RT? What else doesn’t work for it? I thought all non-x86 type apps/games in the Windows 8 Store would work on RT as well.

Yup. They were initially coded for x86 only. Interestingly, neither game works on my desktop machine (Minesweeper crashes and Solitaire won’t log into Xbox Live and hangs), but the new ARM-based Minesweeper runs great on my Surface.

Your desktop needs newer graphic drivers…

        • Bugbog

          Probably just newer drivers.

Already running the latest and greatest from AMD. I keep my machine updated.

Whats the specs of your Desktop machine?

        • himura_kenshin

          Intel Core i5 (1st gen) 2500K
          ASUS P8 P67 Pro (R3) motherboard
8 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM
          Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5
80GB Intel X25-M SSD (OS and Programs drive)
          160GB WD Velociraptor 10,000RPM SATA3 games drive.
1.5TB external portable USB3 drive for media (I forget the model)
Dual monitor (24″ and 30″) each at native 1920×1080.

I think I should be able to handle minesweeper and solitaire. ;-)

nah. Googles search app originally only worked for x86 too. When you make apps in VS you can choose what type you want to build (i dont know WHY you wouldnt choose “neutral” which build for all three, but go figure)

They do. Solitaire and Minesweeper were just one of the exceptions.
