Phil Spencer Explains Why Microsoft Didn’t Talk About Windows Phone Or Windows PC Gaming At E3

16

At this year’s E3, Microsoft’s focus was all about games, just games. For the full 90 minutes of press briefing, Microsoft talked about all the first party and 3rd party games coming to Xbox platform. The surprising part was that Microsoft didn’t even talk about games on Windows and Windows Phone platforms. Phil Spencer is the head of gaming at Microsoft, which includes games on Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone platforms. He responded to the lack of any information on PC and mobile gaming at E3 to Polygon,

“I’m head of gaming at Microsoft,” Spencer said. “When we’re doing gaming strategy, gaming focus inside the company, that’s my job. I think in a lot of ways, you could argue gaming on Windows has never been more healthy in that the biggest of the big franchises, League of Legends, World of Tanks, those things dwarf a lot of what we’re doing in this console space in terms of users and monetization. They’re all on PC.”

Even though Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to Microsoft’s success, Microsoft felt E3 is not the appropriate place to talk about it. For them, E3 is a console show and an Xbox show, and Xbox is the brand millions of people want to watch on TV to know about upcoming games.

Do you agree with Phil?

He is largely what is left after everyone leaves (J Allard, Peter Moore, Robbie Bach, Don Mattrick, Marc Whitten). Hardly the ideal way to get promoted. J Allard was so hungry he once said he wanted the “father of the PlayStation” Kuturagi’s resignation letter on his desk. Phil Spencer says he doesn’t care about the console war.

When anybody leaves they usually left a mess and disorder. Spencer according to that.

I though he handled the actual Xbox show quite well. His comments thereafter….

I’ll stick to PC gaming. Those XBox/ PS exclusives are not going to make me buy any console for that matter. MS’s CEO should stop this nonsense, and release games in parallel, XBox/PC. Darmit, they’re releasing software for iDevices, aDroids, etc. Why release a game exclusively for XBox, and not PC? Makes no sense for a PC gamer like me.

There’s no point in making games at all if they don’t own the platform. How many games do Apple and Google make for their operating systems? In the case of Windows gaming, most of the money goes to Valve and Steam. If Games for Windows had succeeded or if Microsoft built a cloud streaming service like OnLive or PS Now then they could justify building or buying multimillion dollar games.

But they do own WP8/WinRT8 Stores; that’s primarily where they are required!

E3 is for games! I understand WP has a small market now but They could of at least gave WP little shine in the gaming montage at the end. Let people know gaming on WP is still relevant.

WP should me mentioned, however Microsoft know the hardware that is currently out ain’t that great. My guess is WP9 will be mentioned at E3 next year. I personally would have liked WP mentioned, in reality WP doesn’t have or appeal Exclusivity for developers…we are always last on the most popular games…..I would like Microsoft to push to make developers start thinking of WP as an extension to xbox

Hey Phil, you want to win this generation? Make all games have a universal option for $10 more and work on all of Microsoft’s platforms..

      Great idea
