Report: Microsoft To Launch A New 10.6-inch Slimmer And Lighter Surface In October

116

Surface 2 Silver

Last September, Microsoft announced the second generation Surface devices. Microsoft announced thinner and lighter Surface 2 tablet running Windows RT 8.1 OS. Last month, Microsoft started selling the 3rd generation Surface Pro 3 device and all SKUs going on sale from next month. Now, the obvious thing from Microsoft is to announce the 3rd generation 10.6-inch Windows RT based tablet.

As per Digitimes, Microsoft is expected to launch a 10.6-inch Surface 3 in October 2014, with production of components to begin in August and volume production of the tablet to kick off in September. As you expect, this upcoming Surface will be thinner and lighter than the previous version of Surface.

Cool. Hope their cost of production drops…

  • 12Danny123

I suspect this is going to run Atom core processor

    • tande04

      No it is RT.

  • tande04

Please be come in black… please come in black.

  • bibleverse1

I thought Windows RT was going away?

    • Krinos

It’s supposedly merging with WP into Windows ONECORE!

      • Credo

        Windows One

        • Krinos

          Onedows

          • dave

            more like OneDoze,zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

        • dave

Onecore is a common app model , not an operating system,
this is RT , it’s DOA, another big waste of time and money

          • donzebe

Microsoft would have shut it down if it was DOA or a “big waste” of time. The only problem is it arrive too soon, and many more people are embracing it. The fact that it is not selling in millions does not mean it is not doing well.

          • dave

too soon? try 6 years to late, a very very small amount of people are embracing it, there are a tiny amount of descent app, no Dev interest, only MS making devices, they already wrote off almost a billion dollars on surface, RT is Dead, this device prob wont even ever be sold, RT cant run any of the 3 Million windows “programs” , it shouldn’t even be called Windows, it should be called Tiles, because that’s all it can do.

          • ddd

            umad

          • donzebe

It is call windows RT because it does not run Windows programs. Why should it run Windows programs when it was not meant for that.

    • Jeff Hung

Those who bash RT all the time probably know nothing about system software development. Making Windows supporting ARM processor is more about API abstraction/virtualization and eventually benefits all the developers. Those who work on RT aren’t building a complete different product in a cave while Windows for Intel is built in another.

      • dave

take a look at metrostorescanner, Want to see more history? link in the top right corner, growing at < 50K app per year, if iOS/Andriod stop today they would need 20 years to catch up, then take a look at the apps, 99% crap/useless ,look at the number of majic 8 ball, tick tack toe, tip calc, etc, its a sad mess, don't reallyknow what peoples knowing "nothing about system software development." has to do with it, I guess that your way of saying that you do.

        • Jeff Hung

It seems you don’t even know what “system software” is.

          • http://www.spauldesign.com/ Simon Paul

He doesn’t know what anything is.

          • dave

wow, good one!, is that lil ugly bug in your profile pict really you?

          • dave

that’s your the best response, RT is nothing but crappy little version of IE with some weak Com+ wrappers ported to ARM.

      • Don’t fear the future

Don’t worry. Dave is just a troll who seeks out Windows 8/RT articles and posts nothing but hate comments about Windows 8/RT. Just click on the little grey guy next and you’ll see it for yourself.

        • dave

enter the male nurse fanboy troll, at least that was short!

  • NITSUK

This is great news, the Surface RT and 2 are selling fast in UK, just hope they do it with pressure sensitive pen and larger capacity options.

  • patstar5

RT=fail I will never buy a windows rt product again. Have dell venue 11 pro and love it.

    • donzebe

I love my Surface RT, works great for me.

      • http://g00.cc/ SpitefulGOD

He probably bought the original surface, I found it a little slow too, the only thing they need to make the surface RT viable (for me anywho) is a desktop torrent client and installable video codecs.

        • MindHead

Try out Torrex Pro. It’s a pretty detailed torrent app, that was built in the metro frame work and works with background downloads. I think if they can push out modern Office, they could have great product on their hands.

      • NGM123

Love my Surface, hate that its RT. With the price, battery life etc there is just no need for RT anymore. If there was a decent store where you could get 1or 2 decent apps maybe it would be OK, but the app store is a fkn joke!

    • nilchak

I will again buy a Windows RT product. I have a Nokia RT based 2020 tablet and I love it. It has worked great for me so far and I will buy a RT tablet again as a upgrade anytime.

      • semx34

Same… looking forward to a great RT

      • Tirinti

The problem is it costs the same as Lenovo Miix 2 10″ and has limited functionality.
And both of them are too large.

    • dave

agree , RT is total crap, worthless POS, P.T Barnum was right! Sucker is born everyday

      • reKitab

Surface RT is different from the Pro version. unless you’re here for trolling. Joe_HTH says nothing about RT.

        • koenshaku

For the average user RT works perfectly fine. I as one user said need video codecs and need some legacy applications such as photoshop and it made no sense for MS not to share the windows phone eco system with the RT store because their apps are grossly lacking there.

      • INDIAN

window rt will have a bright future under window threshold window rt will have all the apps of window smartphone . as window rt and threshold will be combined and will be same.

    • Joe_HTH

I will never buy another Windows tablet with the desktop and legacy, because they suck on a tablet and they make it more bloated and more difficult, and you have to deal with all of the issues of full Windows, which most people don’t want to deal with on a tablet.

      • reKitab

        Get yourself an RT then.

        • dave

yeah , hurry, this may be the last RT device ever!

          • koenshaku

LOL yeah I would trade no ultra portable for my Surface pro 3 right now.

          • INDIAN

in window threshold window rt will have all the apps of window smartphone. thus window rt is having very bright future. it is like a window smartphone with big screen.

  • keith

I’ll buy if it has an atom processor.

  • Tips_y

Will it be using Qualcomm this time instead of Nvidia?

  • dave

whats the point, RT has less than 100 descent apps, worst toy device on the planet!
    that just cant admit it’s….DOA

    • uwbadgers16

It doesn’t aim to be a toy device. It’s full productivity with office preinstalled.

      • dave

RT office is POS, no better than any clone out there, doesn’t even support Excel macros, there aren’t even 100 descent apps, its a dead toy, no OEMs,no Apps, no Devs, no future! , It would have been a great Idea in 2006, next Gen of Intel CPU will make it absolutely pointless, look on the bright side , might be rare collectors item in 30 years!

        • http://www.spauldesign.com/ Simon Paul

You sir, are smoking crack. I use my Surface RT with Office all the time. Works great, its the very reason I bought.

          • dave

the RT version of Office is weak, no better than any of the office clones out there, fine for Novice but lack of VBA and Macros makes it non starter for professionals.

          • Don’t fear the future

That doesn’t matter to Dave. Everything you say is a lie, no matter what. There is no sense in arguing with this guy. He is the biggest troll of trolls. Just click on the little grey guy next to his name and see for yourself. All he does is frequent any Windows 8 / RT article and trashes Windows 8 / RT. Just look for yourself.

And when you call him out on it, he calls you a troll. Watch. He’ll call me a troll.

          • dave

classic troll, dying to make me the topic, doesn’t even have Windows RT, he’s a male nurse that had a surface pro I3 issued to him by his hospital, so now he’s an expert!

          • Don’t fear the future

See. He called me a troll.

          • dave

Don’t fear the future is male nurse not IT professional. who writes too long post loaded with opinion, short on facts

          • Don’t fear the future

I’m not a nurse. Don’t know why you think so. You are a developer. Why don’t you tell us using your developer expertise why you can’t make apps for Windows RT instead of just posting hateful comments.

Explain to everyone why you frequent Windows 8/RT articles and just start picking fights.

          • dave

I don’t Develop RT apps because almost anything that can be done with the shitty RT API can be done with frameworks like angularJS and work on every device with a modern browser. If that’s not good enough, then full desktop apps

MS wasted almost a billion dollars on these stupid tablets that almost no one wants, if you think I’m the only Dev out there that hates it you are uninformed, I read all kinds of articles, been commenting on RT because I have an informed opinion, and it’s entertaining to watch the clueless fanboyz scamble, although maybe shouldn’t be picking on paul simon, looks like he might have down’s syndrome,

other people express my exact view on just about anything else.

now why don’t you tell me about your mission critical metro app!

          • Don’t fear the future

So basically, your stuck in the past. That explains a lot. I agree, X86 and the Desktop will always be king, but the reality is, ARM really does have a place in the world and RT is Microsoft’s way to address it.

The unification of “one OS that runs on all” will have RT as a basis, since smartphones use ARM, and ARM only can run RISC.

He is just calling you a nurse because he thinks it will be an insult to you. He used to post here on MS-news a while ago, and either got bored because no one was responding to his troll comments, or was banned. A few weeks ago he showed up on another site, posting his tombstone pictures with my and a few other aliases, and when he was finally caught in his lies he started going on a personal attack. He then started claiming that his dog died and that is why he was going on the attack, and then continued with his juvenile personal attacks. Finally he was banned from the other site and decided to start trolling and attacking people here. He is just the typical Apple fanboy troll that will hop from site to site spreading his hatred for anything that is not Apple. Don’t try arguing with him, let him post his lies and eventually he will get bored and move on.

          • dave

actually I’m an MS stack Developer, Dogs still alive barely, more alive than POS RT, go back to winbeta with your lil buddies (start3eye and Rob. h some teabagger dipshit aka the Winbeta troll patrol). if telling people the truth that Windows RT and WP are DEAD is hate we need to redefine the word.
if you wanna see what a real troll is check his profile, he has probs with everyone who disagrees with him, he has three approaches insult, shut up, or go away! thinks everyone is apple fan cause he is so insecure about his Dead Phone and Dead RT

          • nohone

You said that you already put your dog down, that you did it over the July 19-20 weekend. You said that it shook you up bad, and that is why you went on the personal attacks. But here you have said the dog is still alive – is this a different dog, or was it just a lie to gather sympathy so you could continue with the personal attacks?

Yep, I wrote those things. One was in response to a guy to, in an article about Cortana, started talking about how Microsoft was a monopoly and Apple was clean and pure.
Another the next comment was in response to arrow2010, someone well known to those around here who would make comments simply writing “meow” and nothing else.

As for the last comment I wrote, yep, wrote that also. It was to an Apple fangirl who was just trolling about how great Apple was, and how it was beating Windows. For people who are going to troll, there is nothing better than making fun of their favorites and watching the melt down – much like the meltdowns you repeatedly have.

          • dave

oh I forgot , fav troll move, and the one that pissed me off the most. call people a lair!, you a little troll POS, are you really so clueless. i’ve seen a hundred post with you using your same BS.

I don’t know one MS stack Dev, and I know a lot of them who likes, RT or Phone for that matter, the .Net user group I attend hasn’t had one pres on either in Years, cause we all know there not worth our time! I have to admit that it’s prob wrong to have fun watching the fanzy squirm trying to defend these crap platforms. I say tough f%&^kin Shit. they need to wake up. I’ve seen many platforms go down the shitter over the years, MS doesn’t get to pick, they can try but and lose money at it, but it’s not there call. the market has decided and this shit is DEAD!

          • Don’t fear the future

But in his defense, he is a on a Microsoft News website and he likes Microsoft. Your on a Microsoft News website and you seem to hate Microsoft.

            See the difference.

          • nohone

Quoting your whole post for posterity:

“oh I forgot , fav troll move, and the one that pissed me off the most. call people a lair!, you a little troll POS, are you really so clueless. i’ve seen a hundred post with you using your same BS.

“I don’t know one MS stack Dev, and I know a lot of them who likes, RT or Phone for that matter”

You do not know one MS stack dev? You know a lot of MS stack devs who like RT or phone? Kind of a contradictory comment, you don’t know any but those you do like it. But I am glad they like it, you should join them.

“user group I attend hasn’t had one pres on either in Years”
Not sure what a “pres” is, and not really sure what a “fanzy” is (“fun watching the fanzy squirm”). Really, this “shit” is dead? Hmm, I know over 250 million copies of Win8 back in January, which eclipses the number of iPhones sold by quite a lot, and we know that it makes the number of Macs sold look downright pitiful and shameful, but you continue thinking that MS platforms are dead.

This is the melt-down part, where he can’t keep his thoughts straight and starts to lose control.

          • dave

fanzy fanginas whatever , why you insist on bringing apple into it I have no Idea, Windows RT is DEAD,Windows Phone is DEAD, No one want them, Dev’s don’t want to waste time on them. Windows 8 is losing market share even though its the only retail option. I’m melting down, don’t think so you are the one who won’t let it go!
RT API is IE with com+ based wrapper crap, is done over, even microsoft execs admit it. get over it, its DEAD,DEAD,DEAD.

          • nohone

Win8 is losing market share to what? Mac? Linux? ChromeOS? Win8 is growing in sales, 100s of millions of copies sold. I know you don’t like that, but it is the truth.

“RT API is IE with com+ based wrapper crap”
This line right here shows that you haven’t a clue what you are talking about. Stop now, before you show yourself to be even more of a fool.

          • dave

yeah it is, do some research instead of posting BS all the Time.

          • nohone

I can see that you are going to ignore part of the comment, and continue on with another direction change. So let me fill it out for you:
COM+ has nothing to do with Win8. COM+ is about transaction processing, lifetime management, activation, queuing, etc on the server side. It was introduced back with WinXP. It is closely related (and actually incorporated) what used to be called DCOM. As for “RT API is IE” – nope, you were wrong again. RT is COM with some additional language syntactical sugar to make it easier to work with. There are then projections to different languages – namely .NET and JavaScript, so you can call from those languages in a way that is native to the language. lowerCasing for JavaScript, and CamelCase for .NET. Since JavaScript is a language, you can develop your apps for Win8 in HTML if you wish. Or, you can use XAML (remember that, you are a WPF dev so it should be familiar to you) with C++ or .NET. But you are not required to use IE.
As for your direction change, we actually debated (well, I debated, you just started throwing out pictures of your tombstone) this before. First off, Win8.1 is going up, while Win8 marketshare is going down, and they are going in separate directions at about the same rate. With more and more Windows computers on the market, moving that needle even a little bit is tough – when there are 1.5 billion WIndows devices out there, you need to sell more than the 250 million Win8.x copies they announced back in January. We have also discussed these charts – that they are not an accurate scientific method for determining the true marketshare. But what I also like about that chart is that Linux is not even ranked, and Apple is actually losing marketshare, below 4%. So pathetic, Apple!

          • dave

no more time for your BS from Com wiki

“Microsoft’s new Windows Runtime (or WinRT, not to be confused with Windows RT) programming and application model is essentially a COM-based API”

stop pretending to be so f%^king smart

          • nohone

Thank-you for proving me right, and yourself wrong, again. You wrote: “… with com+ based wrapper …” You then quoted a COM wiki as “… is essentially a COM-based API.” COM is not COM+. Any developer who knows anything about the MS development stack, knows there is a big difference between COM and COM+. I even clarified that in my response to you. But as usual you try to pretend that you wrote something that you didn’t, and then blame everyone else for your mistakes. Try to rewrite history after the fact, you are such a good Apple fanboy.

          • dave

Component Services (COM+) consists of the latest version of COM, distributed COM (DCOM), and Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC), plus additional functionality.

The factor that led Microsoft to these disastrous decisions was the same one that decided we couldn’t shorten the name of Windows RT to WinRT. WinRT is a bundle of different technologies – an object model based on COM+

          • nohone

That is correct, but you stated it the other way around. RT does not include server services, there is no DCOM, transactions, queuing, etc in RT, just a COM layer. If you were a Microsoft stack developer, as you claim, then you would know ths stuff. Instead you are just searching for quotes, and pasting stuff that contains the keywords you think match. If you knew anything about developing with Microsoft technologies, you would know this basic stuff, but you are not, and you are proving it over and over.

          • dave

haven’t worried about com since the 90s it suck then , it sucks now, .Net was created to solve that, if you were any kind of Dev you’d know that. your just another regurgitator, if RT was based on MFC you be talking that up, cause your just a lil fangina troll, i’ve forgot more about programming thaN YOU WILL EVER KNOW! HOW BOUT THAT wINDOWS 8 MARKET SHARE?

          • nohone

There is one person, or small group of people, who follow me from site to site and like to tell me how evil I am, how I need psychiatric help, how I need to save my soul, who would list random and unrelated quotes from history. There was one guy telling me that I need to change my ways and stop making positive comments towards Microsoft and not so flattering comments about Apple (I don’t hate Apple, I have a number of their products) before I find my self getting knifed in a parking lot. This is what these people are like, that they have such a hatred for anyone that does not tow the Apple party line that they will stop at nothing to make sure their favorite wins, at any cost. No debate, just if you “think differently” then you must be stopped. I like to think of it as a badge of honor, that they are so consumed with me that they wait, watch, and jump in whenever I like to tell my thoughts and opinions. Their obsession so consumes them, that they are what they profess to hate. I rather enjoy it.

          • dave

What a paranoid jackass, so funny how you stop responding below after losing the debate then return to the comfort of your fellow fangina and make and make a post like that, you call people continually call people apple fans if they disagree even though they show no preferences, it’s not one person following you around , it’s many people noticing that you have mental issues, look like you can only find comfort will others with the same affliction like fear the fangina, I made the mistake of trying to enlighten you on the state of RT and WP, even stareye and rob. H would eventually concede when confronted with enough facts, you on the other hand are what people are talking about when they use the term troll and fanboy, blind to reality and unwilling to even consider you might be wrong, I do not hate MS, haven’t had an apple product since the 80’s, didn’t follow you anywhere. There is is no group following you. What is the excuse for the personal attacks this time? Your cat die?
I had shown very clearly that you have simply been lying. You are not a “MS stack dev” as you claim since you have consistently gotten the most simple of development concepts wrong. There was no reason showing how wrong you are, again. As someone who really is a developer, you were not “enlightening” me with your lies, you were just doing searches on the web, picking up lines here and there that made it sound like you know what you were talking about, and posting them.
Oh, and I reported your personal attack. Hopefully the good people here will get rid of you from yet another site.

            Why are you trolling?

          • Don’t fear the future

I’m doubting the Developer thing too, because he never uses technical explanations of why RT stinks. He just says “Windows RT only has 100 good apps….”

If Windows RT “truly stinks”, it would mean that there is something complex about it’s SDK. However, Gameloft just released a great First Person Shooter (Modern Combat 5) on both Windows 8 / RT and Windows Phone 8’s app stores. If one can make a FPS of that quality on a platform, you can make any game you can think of on that platform. The best part is that the game launched simultaneously with the Android and iOS versions. Meaning that there could be a significant change in developer interest for RT and Windows phone.

He’d have an argument that RT stinks if there was roadblocks in the SDK. He’s yet to point any out, and Gameloft just proved you can make a very high quality metro app, even though it’s just a game. On the medical side, there are already EMAR and medical reference apps in the Windows store, home automation apps, car automation apps (Remote Link for ON-STAR on Windows Phone 8), etc…

          • dave

stop pretending to know anything about software development.

“it would mean that there is something complex about it’s SDK.”

the opposite is the cause, it’s a sanboxed tinkertoy, that’s why all the apps suck, because RT API is really base on old tech called Com+ common object model and a frameless version Internet explorer ,it’s a really weak enviroment, that why all the apps lack features, that why Dev ignore it, that’s why it had falied.

tell me about that mission critical metro app, I only ask 6 times, why can’t you answer one simple question male nurses aid!

          • Don’t fear the future

I just told you, but you don’t listen/read, EVER.

          • nilchak

Dave is just an Excel macro writing so called “programmer” . Its short-hand for a clerical job that he probably has. Full stack my ass. Its these junior programmer think where they like to utter these keywords to cover their deficiencies.

          • dave

actually its 99% C#, funny how all the fanginas think they have ESP, but I bet that giant nose can smell the curry chicken from a country mile , indeed my friend, i must say!, lmfao

          • Don’t fear the future

Programmer or no programmer, he brings nothing to the conversation except hate.

          • nilchak

You little guy, stop with your name calling – its only degrades you, not the person you are name calling – provided of course you have the intelligence and sense to grasp that basic fact.

Whenever I see guys like you resort to the cheapest tactic of name calling, I realize how facile you must be – cause you don’t seem to realize that others could actually do the same to you.

A slightly intelligent person would actually argue fact with fact instead of name calling to make his little ego feel a bit better (for the moment, cause you never really feel good about yourself).

Anyway’s you haven’t added one iota of value to this thread – so I will move on to some other thread and topic. So long to you salving your own hurt ego with your own cheap tactics my friend. So long.

          • FUD Hater

And by your posts you sound like you are 13 years old. Grow up.

          • Don’t fear the future

Thanks for the advise. I guess I may have been just pouring gas on the fire. I was just trying to call him out. He can call me anything he wants. It’s just an opinion. Clicking on his avatar shows the FACTS about who he is. It’s that easy.

            I’ll ignore him.

        • NGM123

Sorry, I’m disappointed with RT because of the lack of available apps, but Office does work brilliantly. You sir are talking shit.

Looks like after being banned from yet another site, the troll has found a new place to post this junk.

        Pot meet kettle.

        • Deer

Whenever people say that in the discussion boards, I think of this:
“Hello pot! It’s so nice to meet you. Perhaps, you’d like a cup of tea?”
“Yes, that would be delightful kettle!”

          • nohone

He is just some useless nobody who repeats that same line every time I post. No creativity, no clever response, just the same dull response over and over. He/She/It thinks it bothers me, but I like it since it shows how useless they are to humanity, not providing anything but the same old same old – much like the computer software they support.

NVIDIA K1 Denver 64-bit, dual core CPU. Will be awesome. Can’t wait

    • Bugbog

Nvidia ARM chips should be ‘dead’ to Microsoft.

  • hysonmb

I hope they do release this, because it’ll further drive the prices of the 1st gen Surface down and I’m planning to buy one of those for my kid before school this year.

  • Tirinti

    10″ is too large.
I was waiting for Surface Mini, but they cancelled it so I bought Lenovo Miix 2 8″.

    • rjmlive

how is it? i have the dell

    • http://g00.cc/ SpitefulGOD

Depends what you want it for, 10″ is OK for small productivity work, the 12″ Pro 3 is good but I prefer the 14″ of the Sony Fit A for development and the 8″ iconia for browsing / torrents / metro stuff.

  • Willem Evenhuis

I hope it has a stylus support and nfc.

  • TheCyberKnight

Slimmer + faster + same size + pen included + same price = ordering day one.

  • Joe_HTH

This is the device I want. Drop the kickstand to make it thinner and lighter, and drop the USB 3.0 port to make it thinner. Make this a pure tablet. Take Windows RT and strip out the desktop and all of the legacy code, and merge it with WP8.1, so that the store can run Windows metro apps and Windows Phone apps. Include a microSD and microHDMI port. Stick in a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 or preferrably 64-bit 810. You’ve got an instant sale.

Reserve the kickstand and USB port for the Pro devices.

    • dave

the WP/RT merge is pure fantasy, RT doesn’t support so called legacy code(3 million Programs) has < 100 apps that don't suck, waste of money, tough it'll prob be < 100$ on Ebay , after it flops just like all other RT tablets

windows 9 please! it wasn’t the quality or performance of the hardware which killed that device, it was the confusion of desktop and desktop office!
