According to CNET, the upcoming significant update for Window 8/RT devices to codenamed ‘Blue’ could be marketed under the name of ‘Windows 8.1′. Lots of upcoming new features of Windows Blue got leaked a week ago which included new personalization features, improved PC settings page, Internet Explorer 11, etc,.

Even Windows RT Blue update will be branded as Windows RT 8.1. Windows 8.1 naming is simple and an obvious one which denotes the nature of the update to Windows 8.

What do you think?

I think this is the right move, will lower expectations since it’s only 8.1…I still think they’ll charge for this update, it’ll be free for a limited time and then you’ll have to pay some low price for it

I disagree. I think this is more like Windows XP SP2, where the “under-the-hood” changes are significant enough that even though they could have sold it as an upgrade/new OS they’d rather everyone get it to improve the Windows experience, even if that means they have to give it away for free.

I Agree completely. When has Microsoft EVER charged for a service pack?! @twitter-14934398:disqus There’s just no precedent to sugest that MS would charge for an update.

If you do some reading on Blue, you will quickly know it’s not an OS the way Windows 7, windows 8, and Windows 9 are. Blue is just an update to Windows 8 so there will be no charge. Maybe you are confusing Blue with Windows 9 which will probably come in 2014 or 2015. Windows 9 will be an OS so they will charge for it but Blue is just an update to Windows 8 so it will be free

To be honest, I could not care less of the naming. All I want to know that there will be a) an option to boot directly to desktop and on desktop view an option b) to show Start button which opens ‘All apps’.

    Followed by Windows 8.11.. :p

So they will follow the OS X naming model. Good.

Or more like IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9, IE10, IE11, etc. when it´s a mayor reléase, and just .1, .2, etc. when it´s more like fixes and minor features… As the whole software industry does, and not just OSX…

i want to have my pop email account on my surface! i love the surface RT but just want that!!! make it happen MS!!! I’m a Windows 8/Phone Evangelist!!!!

I’ll admit, I wish they were sticking with the name Blue. Sure, 8.1 is more logical and less confusing, but Windows Blue rolls off the tongue nicely. Plus, there’s loads of songs you could use for advertising it (Blue Skies, for instance).
