Rumor: 2560 x 1440 Surface & Super-High-Res 7-inch Windows 8 Tablets

Tom Warren over at The Verge , who has been fairly reliable in the past, believes Microsoft is hinting at a 2560 x 1440 Surface Pro and high density 7-inch tablets at the BUILD conference going on this week.

“…Microsoft appears to be dropping some accidental hints at the future of Surface and other 7- and 8-inch tablets.” -Tom Warren

One session at Build talked about building apps across multiple screen sizes, during the session Microsoft showed potential screen sizes for Windows 8 tablets.  One of these resolutions was a 10.6″-inch tablet running at 2560 x 1440.  This may potentially be the next screen resolution for the Surface 2, which is currently 1920 x 1080.  There also lies the possibility this will be a  tablet by an OEM or unannounced ODM design that has not been publicly announced yet.

Other potential display resolutions shown included a 7-inch display running at 1920 x 1200 and a 7.5-inch display with a 1440 x 1080 resolution.  OEMs may be shipping these high resolution 7″ – 8″ tablets in the near future.  Interestingly, these numbers show for the possibility of a 4:3 and 16:10 aspect ratios for these tablets.

One potential issue with these higher resolutions is a negative impact on battery life, but with Haswell this may be less of a concern.  Another issue is that with higher resolution and touchscreens you typically have DPI enabled; Windows supports up to 500% scaling, but most users will typically not deal with anything past 200%.  With the scaling you lose some of the potential workable space than without scaling.  However, user demand for high density displays is greater than ever.

I wouldn’t mind such a tablet to be a bit thicker for its size if could contain some more battery juice. Would go nice with haswell. Could perhaps bump up use from 13 hours (I read somethere) to hopefully 24 hours.

13 hours to 24 hours? That’s probably BayTrail (Atom) instead of Haswell (i3, i5, i7). I don’t know about any tablet or PC running full Windows on a i3/i5i/i7 able to reach over 8 hours of battery life. But tablets running on Atom can last much longer. The battery in Asus Vivotab Smart lasts about 11h.

My w510 lasts 9 hours on continuous playback. It’s running on atom.

        my 2011 toshiba z830-11j gives me 8 hours and its a sandy bridge i7 – granted that’s a mobile i7.

Was looking to buy a tablet in the near future, now I think I’ll wait to see what’s coming out in the next few months.
