Rumor: Microsoft Planning Office Suite For Linux In 2014

Office 2013 RTM Download

This is insane if it turns out to be true. According to the rumor reported by ExtremeTech, Microsoft is apparently planning to release Office suite for Linux in 2014. ExtremeTech reports that since Microsoft is already working to port Office to Android, it makes them easy to post to desktop linux as well.

According to this source, who is presumably one of Microsoft’s open source developers, Microsoft is taking a “meaningful look” at releasing a full Linux port of Office in 2014. The sudden change of heart is apparently due to Linux showing “commercial viability,” and because Microsoft is reportedly already working on Office for Android. Android, as you may already know, is a Linux-based operating system, meaning a lot of the porting work will have already been done — it shouldn’t take too much effort to take the next step and bring Office to Ubuntu, or whichever distro Microsoft favors.

Do you think Microsoft will release Office suite to target 1-2% of Linux PC users? I don’t think so.

  • Joe Morales

    Well, this is interesting…

  • asdadsasd

    I believe it’s called WINE.

Crazy if true. Can Microsoft for a change focus on their platform rather than enlighting the other platforms constantly? or have they given up on being a platform company? whats the incentive to be part of the Microsoft platform when you can go and use other EXCLUSIVE platform content from other companies AND get everything that Microsoft has?

People would get Android or iOS…have all the Google services or Apple services that people on Windows do not and then get all the Microsoft services too lol.

Why would it affect you if we (I am a Linux user) could use Microsoft Office? It is the only piece of software apart from games I would pay for.

  • Davey

Not in this universe. How did this rumour even get legs???

  • Bolop

Yea, like Linux was a great market for any Microsoft related product

    • Jt

exactly, isn’t that the reason why they use Linux in the first place?

  • DW

I see it as a matter of time, more than if. They will eventually have .NET and other key technologies on Linux too, but they will pick and choose their target platform (eg. Android), rather than supporting everything. This way, they can choose their competitor and partly control it. They will become stronger in cross-platform tools and at the same time keep other flavours of Linux out of the market.

.NET has been on Linux for ages – ever heard on Mono? (and also MonoTouch for iOS and Android)

  • donzebe

Why can Microsoft keep something unique to its own platform?

  • w1ngnut

Well, if this is true and they port Visual Studio then goodbye windows lol

  • frankwick

Why?? The majority of Linux installs are server based. There are very few real desktop installs and those people are generally anti-Microsoft.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Don’t make Linux actually relevant…!!!!!
