Silverlight Powers The New Xbox LIVE TV Apps

Last year, we broke the news about the fact that Silverlight is coming to Xbox through a Microsoft’s job post. Microsoft removed the job post immediately and provided no info on Silverlight for Xbox. There were many reports after that which stated that Microsoft is launching Silverlight based marketplace for Xbox platform. That never happened till now. Today Gigaom posted an info on upcoming Xbox LIVE TV apps from various Microsoft partners around the world.

From Gigaom,

We’ve confirmed that the apps expected to be added with the next major update to Xbox Live will be based on Silverlight — at least to a point. The framework they’re being built on is code-named Lakeview, which is essentially a prettied up version of Silverlight with new features like Xbox Kinect’s voice recognition and gesture control. Surprisingly enough, partners are not using Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming for video delivery but have chosen to use H.264-encoded video with Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) instead.

There is still no official word on this matter and whether Microsoft will allow 3rd party developers to build apps for Xbox platform.
