Sony PS4 Continues To Outsell Xbox One In The US, Now Seven Months In A Row

25

For the seventh straight month, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has beat Xbox One in sales in the US. Even the increasing of console sales due to price cut was not enough for Microsoft to catch up with PS4. Despite having a solid platform for both games and entertainment apps, Microsoft’s console sales is not up to the mark due to poor marketing. Recently, Sony announced that they have sold over 10 million consoles to consumers to date which is almost double of what they announced back in February. Also Sony reported that PS4 “led the month for next generation software sales by a considerable margin,” and that “more than half of total next generation software sales” were for PS4. Find the list of top games in sales for the month of July below,

1.The Last of Us (PS4, PS3)
2.Minecraft (360, PS3)
3.FIFA 14 (360,PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Vita)
4.Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
5.Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
6.Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox One, 360, PS4, PS3, Wii U, PC)
7.Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
8.Sniper Elite III (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
9.NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
10.Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, PS3, 3DS, DS, PS4, Wii U, Xbox One, Vita, PC)

The good news for Microsoft is that they are expanding Xbox One availability to several new markets in the month of September and also they have announced several new Xbox One hardware bundles, new game launches lined up for this holiday season which should boost their sales.

What do you think Xbox team can do increase the sales?

    “The good news is…”

There is no good news except maybe this will speed up the decision to sell of all of the hardware devision to no longer distract the company from focusing on product that matter; Software & Services.

    • WPhan

I’m sick of you saying the same thing over and over but hearing this and how WP market share has dropped to the 2% range I am begrudgingly admitting you may be right all along.

      Sighhhhhhh :(

The xbox brand was good until they decided making tv shows and DRM was better for business on a gaming console. Shot themselves in the foot with inferior hardware then they are now trying to backtrack when it is really too late for all that now… In other news I love my Surface pro 3… =)

        • deathdealer351

I liked the drm thing. They totally screwed the pooch on selling it. Also they only went half way, with DRM you need to go all in or not at all.

      • Guesty

Why hasn’t there been a post here about the latest Windows Phone market share now at a painful 2% or did I miss it?

  • Robert Sims

Bought my xbox on day one and I can honestly say I love it. It does so much more than a ps4 but that could be its downfall. Gamers want a console to play games on…. Not to do all that entertainment stuff. Iys a shame really because the xbox team have really been trying to get xbox back up there with the ps4. Monthly updates are getting better and the games are amazing. The drm problem has really hurt the brand and it going to take a long time before people forget it. The only way they going to sell more consoles is by offering a price cut. Leys hope the new markets in September can help boost sales.

    • dev

Microsoft wanted to position Xbox One not only for gamers to reach much more people. That’s completely ok IF they will delivery much, much more apps.
But I guess that’s the big problem. This company simply doesn’t work together.

Don Mattrick Fault. That guy was a Moron.

    • JasperJ

He just carried out Ballmer approved plan. That’s the moron to blame.

      • dev

Bullshit! The CEO is not responsible for building products. Ballmer wasn’t even a technical guy. Mattrick was a big jerk and couldn’t even make a good presentation. But at the end it was again bad execution from Microsoft: bad Kinect integration, no killer apps/games for Kinect, very unfinished Xbox OS. And Microsoft is simply not able to build and push own visions. Instead they make this uservoice crap where guys on the internet – not even nearly representing the whole customers – are telling what they want.

        • JasperJ

Have you seen Ballmer jumping around like a drunken app sweating up the stage yelling? Talk about bad presentation!!!!

Mattrick may be an idiot but he was Ballmer’s approved idiot and carrying out the strategy Ballmer choose to implement.

  • Blaze Blue

one I really think you could have left out the crap about how much Sony is doing. All that crap is already spread across the gaming news. But it’s good to know that they are spreading across more country’s

  • Abraham Soto

This was Don Matrick fault,, it create a very sub par E3 presentation, when hew was asked about the people who dont have Internet he say buy a 360 plain and simple, DRM, Do not share games, Installs the complete BLU RAY to play, Internal Hard Disk that cannot be changed ( Can be expanded by USB, but if the internal HD suffer any damage you are screw ), and the weak GPU make the XBONE look bad. Microsoft do this to them-self..

  • Jason Barrios

I would be worried if the following weren’t true:

    * Xbox One released in the same markets as PS4

    * Xbox was not lead platform for Evolve, Witcher III, AC Unity, Call of Duty, The Division

    * Xbox did not have a new relationship with EA with the new EA Access program

    * Xbox also has new Madden 15/ Fifa 15 bundles

    * Exclusivity of Tomb Raider – Rise of the Tomb Raider

    * First party titles and exclusives like Sunset Overdrive, Halo MC, Halo 5, Fable Legend, Quantum Break and Forza Horizon 2

    * Xbox was not profitable division (which it is) for MS

    * Sony was not losing money hand over fist

    * Direct X12 were coming in Q4 2015

MS locks up Tomb Raider (even if timed exclusive) and the fact that Sony did not have a single major 3rd Party Dev on stage at Gamescom is telling to me. PS4 head also made statement that he does not understand why gamers only like AAA games.
Sony is running on fumes, not diminishing what they have done, but eventually they will have to deliver on games and I am not seeing anything.

    • Rikkirik

Agree totally. The Xbox will only from september on be shipped to other countries. Sony still will even then be sold in more markets than the Xbox 1.. But we also forget that with the previous generation of game consoles we had the PS ahead of Xbox sales also, but we know how that ended, with Sony scrambling at end of 2013, to claim that they sold as much consoles as Microsoft: 80 million. Also Xbox 360 fans are not replacing their consoles at the same rate as PS3 fans are replacing theirs. Xbox 360 gamers still see a lot of value in their console, as does Microsoft and gamedevelopers. Microsoft is pushing for sales of 100 million Xbox 360’s by the end of 2014. One would wonder why Microsoft and developers are still pushing the 360. One good argument might be the profitability of the Xbox 360, with more than 80 million users, is still pretty high, and maybe higher than on the Xbox1 at the moment. Microsoft itself is not complaining, but keeping to their own agenda. They are confident that history will repeat itself and The Xbox will come out on top. In Q2 sales of PS4 in Japan we’re dismal, a sign that sales are stagnating for the Ps4. Sony is good in manipulating the media, as are most japanees companies, believing them is the biggest mistake one can make. Sony is a struggling company, so “good” news is all they can pour out. Their Tv, Pc business, digital camera, E-reader business are all failing badly or have been sold off

Almost everything you typed is wrong.

As expected by anyone knowledgeable and sane, tier 2 launches are doing almost nothing for Xbox sales. It’s sad this is the result after 10+ months of “wait for Xbox to launch in more countries” from fanboys. Some big plates of crow are ready to be served.

PS4 will still be outselling Xbox by 2:1 globally by the end of 2014.

Tier 2 markets are launching this month to little sales as expected by anyone sane. PS4 is keeping its 1st place in global sales this gen.

Right now PS4 ~10 million, Wii U ~7 million, Xbox One ~5 million sold to consumers.

Xbox One sold 197k in June NPD, down to 131k in July NPD. August NPD doesn’t look good either. The $400 SKU was only a temporary bump so far. The “boost in sales” is over already. There’s no more ‘a faster rate’.

Tier 2 countries will do very little for Xbox sales. An extra 5-15% a month at most after the launch month. Xbox has almost no presence outside of the 13 countries they already launched in. The global picture is accurate as-is.

The 13 countries Xbox One already launched in account for 85-90% of 360 sales. The remaining markets are tiny and PS3/PS4 dominated. Most unlaunched European countries already have stacks of grey market Xboxes.

PS4 is keeping its 1st place in global sales. Xbox is a weak global brand outside of US and UK and it can’t even take those. In European countries like Germany PS4 is outselling Xbox 3:1.

XB1 is currently ahead of 360 time adjusted, but several months in 2014 it’s been selling less than 360 month-to-month. In other words, unless XB1 sales increase, it will fall under 360 time adjusted.

They need a serious momentum boost to keep ahead of 360, they’re still in 3rd place behind Wii U, and even Wii U has been outselling XB1 the last few months in global sales.

XB1 will probably sell less than 360 long term due to a shrinking console market and PS4 taking more marketshare.

        360 2005: 1.178m
        XB1 2013: 3.051m

        360 2006: 6.811m
        XB1 2014 (so far): 1.984m. Pretty much zero chance of XB1’s 2014 outselling 360’s 2006.

That means even if XB1 sells 2 million in the remainder of 2014, it will be even with 360, then get outsold by 360 sometime in 2015.

        360 went on to sell 8m, 11m, 10m, 13.5m, 14m, 10.6m, and 6.2m in subsequent years up to 2013. You think XB1 can keep up? I don’t.

PS3+360 > PS4+XB1. Console market is overall shrinking not growing. Shrinking market + PS4 taking a lot of former 360 marketshare = XB1 sells less than 360, almost guaranteed.

I expect some strong meltdowns as the tier 2 “failure to launch” continues this month, while PS4 Destiny bundles sell by the truckloads.

PS4 is selling on price/performance, better PR and global appeal, long term 1st party support, large number of 1st party studios, more total games and dev support including Japanese and indie devs, wider variety of games, improved PSN since the PS3 days, and PS+ value. It’s seen as the best console for multiplatform games.

PS4 is selling in line with the other two active consoles Wii U and PS3, at around 6-9k a week. PS4 sold 332k in its first two days on sale in Japan, similar to Wii U.

Intent to buy PS4 probably increased by a good amount after TGS 2014. They announced a lot of popular Japanese franchises like Gundam, Dragon Quest, Persona, etc.

PS4 sales will increase as devs move from PS3 to PS4. PS3 is still an active console in Japan, it’s taking longer to fade out. Sony still has a strong overall presence in Japan between PS3, PS4, and Vita.

        http://www.listwar.com

PS4 has many great games that gamers love. That’s why it’s 10+ million in sales and growing. Sony’s large number of well funded 1st parties will ensure PS4 has a ton of great AAA exclusives, as many or more than PS3.

Sony showed a ton of new games at TGS 2014 conference.

It’s sad PS4 is dominating so badly that hateful, delusional microsoft fanboy shills are left desperately spreading lies and FUD about Sony going bankrupt. Keep dreaming, it’s not happening. You are sick in the head and evil.

Sony is on its way to recovering from years of losses and recently posted a quarterly profit as almost all of their divisions were profitable. They are not going bankrupt.

Sony has total assets worth US$148.9 billion dollars, yearly revenue of $75+ billion, and $27+ billion in total equity. It is still one of the largest corporations on the planet with 150,000+ employees, ranked #233 in The World’s Biggest Public Companies on Forbes, and ranked #94 on the Fortune 500 2013.

One rating agency’s opinion on Sony’s stock means almost nothing. Sony is recovering in finances, it posted a profit last quarter with almost all divisions reporting a profit including the Games division, and its stock price is stable or rising recently.

Sony is selling or splitting off their lossy businesses (Vaio, TVs) and focusing on their profitable divisions. This means they’ll soon cut their losses and start turning a profit. Sony is in for a year or two of losses and restructuring, then provided their profitable divisions stay profitable, they’ll be on solid ground.

The games division is in a net profit, posted a profit last quarter, and is well funded. Sony Computer Entertainment employs over 8,000 people working on Playstation across 50 countries. PSN is vastly improved and Sony is continually investing more into improving it.

Macroaxis probability of bankruptcy declined from 79% to 44% and continues to shrink to this day, indicating a recovery.

A single rating agency downgraded their opinion on Sony debt, it means almost nothing, there are MULTIPLE rating agencies and they all amount to investor’s opinions, not directly relating to Sony’s finances.

As an example, streetinsider currently has 10 investment firms with a BUY rating on Sony stock, 5 hold, and zero sell. That’s likely due to Sony posting an operating profit last quarter, and stocks rising in the last 3 months.

The picture is more complicated (and upward looking) than the link you posted. Sony’s finances have improved since then.

It’s sad PS4 is dominating so badly that ignorant fanboys are left desperately wishing Sony would go bankrupt. Look up Sony on Wikipedia, Forbes, Google, Sony’s quarterly reports, etc. and start reading instead of blindly flinging fanboy crap. You might learn something.

These numbers are for the US market only where both consoles are sold. The 2 weeks difference in launch time can not be the only reason why Sony is ahead. The truth is Microsoft is doing things wrong and always say hang on,the better is coming like they’ve been doing with WP.

Microsoft developed and presented the Xbox one as an entertainment box that can also play games whereas Sony developed the PS4 as a gaming console first and then that can also accommodate other forms of entertainment.

Most entertainment features found on gaming consoles can be had on any smart TV and/computer.so people buy consoles primarily for gaming and PS4 made a better case at that.

As for exclusive game titles Microsoft is far behind.sony’s exclusives are more compelling games and hence they sell more and people wanna own a PS4 to play them. Think uncharted, the last of us and so on. But now look at Microsoft’s exclusive like titanfall it’s just another FPS for the most part, and people won’t switch platform or be swayed by one platform because of a FPS.you can easily find a substitute for FPS.

While Microsoft is promising,Sony is delivering when it comes to the consoles.

      • textomatic

I disagree with your exclusive argument. Microsoft has many great exclusive like Halo, Gears, Fable, Forza, Crackdown, and Killer Instinct to name a few. Plus Microsoft’s ability to work with 3rd parties and bring new and exciting games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Titnafall, Sunset Overdrive, and Quantum Break to the Xbox platform is also a big plus in my book. Mark my word, Halo TMC is going to be HUGE!!!! It will move systems and close the gap between the PS4 and Xbox One.

        • Kenny Rawlins

HALO is the only exclusive that MIGHT move a little more Xbox one consoles. The MIGHT is because most of the Halo fans already have a Xbox one or 360 and most new console buyers just won’t make a decision to get the Xbox one over the PS4 because of Halo. Just remember Sony is also preparing uncharted 4 and a lot of other more compelling exclusives.all other Xbox exclusive as much as you might enjoy them, are just not compelling enough to the general public. I own a Xbox one and I don’t have the time to game anymore so I’m fully satisfied with it.however if I was still serious about gaming I would’ve owned both just because I enjoy skyping on the Xbox one.the reality is very few people want to have two consoles or can afford two consoles at the same time.

    More specs most sells.

Although the difference in specifications is very little at the moment is the only thing that makes someone to buy a PS4, thats the PS4 marketing…

Microsoft should invest in marketing and demonstrate its added value is worth it, improve all aspects gradually because general public want a game run at 1080 and 60 fps, if same game in xbone run at 720 the battle is lost, could this be improved by software (dx12)?

  • crista

The reality is that this generation the marketing is the best thing for sell. Both consoles are great. But Ps4 have better marketing and manipulate marketing. Incluide the pathetic websnews against xone. And Ms is doing very well now.. Is simple
