According to WSJ, Acer is planning to launch low cost Windows tablets next year. Acer now has Intel based Windows 8 tablets priced greater than $600 and Acer is looking to further reduce the price as they think as its current ones are “too pricey.” These low cost Windows tablets will be released in early next year and will also so be focused on Chinese market. Acer’s pursuit of lower-priced tablets will cut into its margins, but will help it secure a stronger foothold in the rapidly growing China market, said Daiwa Securities analyst Christine Wang. “Chinese white-box tablet makers are expected to sell some 60 million tablets next year, so it is a really big market,” she said. “None of the major PC brands sells a tablet right now priced to compete with them right now.” Source: WSJ ...

It seems Acer will just not stop complaining about Microsoft releasing their own Windows tablet. Acer President for Greater China, Linxian Lang, has said he expects Microsoft will find building their own hardware like eating “hard rice.” It had previously said  that the Surface would have a “negative impact” on the Windows ecosystem and urged Microsoft to “think twice” about its decision to build the device, adding that it doesn’t think the Windows maker will be good at it. With more and more rumours of more Microsoft-branded hardware, including a Surface phone and Xbox Surface tablet, I think Acer will just have to get used to the new reality. He complained that Microsoft was undercutting its Windows OESMS, noting that Lenovo and Asustek had unveiled plans for Windows RT tablets starting at $599 before Microsoft surprised the market with its $499 home-built Surface. "I don’t know what’s next, what Microsoft will do," Wong said. "We are watching how Surface is doing … How is RT accepted by customers, how Microsoft is aggressive on RT and on Surface, ...

Acer’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer J.T. Wang said to Bloomberg that Microsoft is controlling the hardware process of the upcoming Windows 8 based tablets. He also added that its very troublesome for the hardware makers. I think Microsoft’s strategy is to control the fragmentation among the tablet makers to ensure consistent Windows experience among the devices just as they did it with Windows Phones. According to me, specifying minimum requirements, platform, etc, won’t be a major concern for OEM’s. Lets see how that goes as Windows President Steven Sinofsky is scheduled to demo Windows 8 at the All Things D conference this week. Source: Bloomberg ...
