One demographic Bing has been lacking in is getting more women to use its service.  The company is trying to change and has put together a new ad about ‘heroic women’ and their contributions in 2013.  The ad is airing on tv in many markets over new years eve. The ad features the Sara Bareilles’ song “Brave” seen in many Windows marketing “honestly” campaigns.  Now we have seen feminists get angry when Microsoft makes Xbox ads that appeal to men.  However, as a man I am in no way offended by this ad that appeals to women and hope to see the company do more in the future. The ad features a number of women including: Malala Yousafzai Who stood up to educate us all. After surviving an assassination attempt, she arose stronger than ever.  In 2013 she addressed the UN, was named one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People” and, at ...

Microsoft has posted a new commercial on their official youtube account directly comparing the SurfaceRT to the iPad again.  The new commercial is similar to the ad released a few weeks back, but reflects the new $350 price of the SurfaceRT.  Microsoft recently took a $900 million charge related to lowering the price of the SurfaceRT and inventory adjustments on associated accessories. The ad continues the theme of showing how versatile the SurfaceRT is compared to the iPad.  Look for this commercial on a tv screen near you.  Personally, I’m quite enjoying these ads and I think the message will get through to the average consumer. Skype introduces “Stay Together,” a new campaign via Pereira & O’Dell. The “Stay Together” ads strive to have a powerful emotional connection with the audience instead of focusing on the technology itself; in this case, to keep family and friends in touch despite long distances. A similar type of ad has been recently seen in the Apple “Made in California” commercial. AdAge reports: The first in the series is “The Impossible Family Portrait,” featuring Denis, separated from his family in Uganda and trying to keep in touch with his family and adopted son, over Skype. There’s also “Animal Family Portrait,” [below] about a zookeeper who had to leave Australia but still keeps in touch with her animal friends, and “The Growing Up Family Portrait,” about 10-year-old Julie and her cousin in Brazil. There’s also a contest where Skype asks users to share stories of how they use the service to ...

Microsoft has continued its offensive on Google Shopping over the Christmas season. The charge centres around Google Shopping being based solely around paid placements, while Bing is based on natural search, meaning consumers can never be clear if there are not cheaper deals available which were simply not included because they did not pay the Google tax. While the Google-friendly anti-Microsoft media have laughed off the accusation, I certainly did not know before that Google Shopping was paid ads, and would trust it a lot less than before, suggesting to me that this is an important piece of information to pass on. As regular readers will know my favourite device Windows 8 device is the Asus Taichi, the Dual-screened Windows 8 laptop. The above ad does a good job of positioning the Windows 8 tablet as a premium product and “elegant tool” which one would be “proud to use”, and it is certainly more of a status symbol than just another boring iPad which 200 million people own already. Of course at $1300 and $1600 the price tag also tells its own story. Do our readers agree? Let us know below. ...

This ad for the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga is about a month old, but I have just stumbled over it now. It makes a pretty good case for the hybrid form factor and 360 degree hinge, although I am not sure taking videos with your tablet camera is a good use case, no matter how many iPad users do it. Lenovo recently released the pricing for their Windows 8 range. The WindowsRT Ideapad Yoga II with an Nvidia Tegra 3 chip and 2GB of DDR3 memory powering its 11.6-inch, 1366 x 768 display, with five-point multitouch and up to 64GB of storage in a 2.8-pound, 15.6mm thin package will retail for $799.
