Microsoft is fighting an uphill battle against Google in search advertising market. With Yahoo search deal, Microsoft is now providing the technology for both web search results and search advertising. According to the “State of Paid Search” report for the first quarter of the year, advertisers now spending more money on Bing than ever. In fact, Bing is now growing at a rate double that of Google. Microsoft Advertising’s pubCenter is a publisher platform that enables App developers to deliver targeted advertisements to Windows Phone and Windows 8 applications. Windows 8.1 includes new advertising capabilities that will help developers monetize their apps. Specifically,  Windows 8.1 includes a unique identifier that can be used to improve the quality and relevance of advertisements displayed within Windows Store apps while providing other services such as analytics and app-discovery. In addition to their series of ads for Microsoft’s new tablet- the Surface, Microsoft has released the extended version of their first surface advert on YouTube as a treat to their fans.  The surface tablet was officially released on the 26th, and the 32 GB version is currently sold out in the United States.  While Microsoft has not yet released official figures it appears early sales are going well.  Early projections has Microsoft selling between 3 and 5 million Surface this holiday season. Microsoft has recently published a series of ads for their Surface tablet in cities in California, Texas, Massachusetts, Washington and Chicago. With the ads being painted on street walls and car wash buildings, Microsoft appears to have taken a different approach to advertising.   Some may argue that the Surface ads are cheaper in comparison to other Microsoft products and services, whereas others argue they are integrating street art with advertising, thus creating an innovative way of publicising their tablet.  One thing is for sure, their quirky idea has caught the attention of not only Microsoft users, but also the general public. As part of Advertising Week in New York Microsoft has talked about the opportunities for in-app advertising on Windows 8, which is moving from the traditional complex program model to the often free and ad-supported app model more common in mobile devices. According to reports from Businessweek, Microsoft has filed a complaint against Google to FTC regarding unfair advertising rates. Google is already under scanner by senate regarding unfair business practices and adding Microsoft’s complaint will further make the case stronger against Google. Microsoft’s complaint as follows, Microsoft first complained in September 2007 that Google drastically raised the rate for an ad for Windows Live, a predecessor to Microsoft’s Bing search engine, one of the main rivals to Google’s Internet search, according to the person familiar with the matter. The cost increased to $5 per mouse click from 10 cents a click for placing a Windows Live ad next to search results for the word “hotmail,” Microsoft’s e-mail product, according to the person. Microsoft is claiming Xbox Live gamers in UK spend on average £64 (around $100) per month on games. The numbers come from a small survey of 251 UK Xbox 360 gamers aged between 25 and 34 years old. The most popular games are shooters, followed by racing and RPGs. One third of Xbox Live gamers play casual games or MMOs, and over a third play gambling titles. 360 gamers go online almost every day each week – by contrast, the average male checks websites five days a week.
