Recently, we have been reporting about number of patents related to Augmented Reality glasses by Microsoft. Today, we came across another one which describes a technology to protect the wearer’s eyes. Wearer’s eyes need to be protected from too much light from the display. The brightness of the display is a combination of how much external light gets through the display and how much light is being used to display images. Thus, if too much external light shines through the display the user may experience eye damage or discomfort. A Microsoft patent filed on December 6, 2012 became public today. It describes the touch interactions on a eyewear as we have seen in the Google Glass in the recent times. The patent basically describes that the eyewear can have one or more multi-touch sensors configured for user interaction. The sensors will be able to detect swipe, press gestures and even pressure of the touch. Microsoft describes that sensors could be of resistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, optical, reflective or light based sensor. And these sensors may be affixed or molded into frames of the glass. Last year, TechCrunch reported that Microsoft is in talks to buy Osterhout Design Group for $200 million. While ODG’s current product lineup might not be a great fit within Microsoft’s overall company strategy, we then reported that their technology will help Microsoft to build new products like Fortaleza glasses. Osterhout Design Group also owns 140 patents related to wearable computing, so Microsoft can also benefit from it. Today, TechCrunch reported more information about this Microsoft’s deal with ODG. Microsoft has paid up to $150 million to buy IP assets related to augmented reality, head-borne computers, and related items from the Osterhout Design Group. “In terms of what we’re doing [at ODG], we don’t meake weapons.
