Gartner today released their Worldwide PC shipments report which revealed that total shipments were 75.8 million units in the second quarter of 2014, a 0.1 percent increase from the second quarter of 2013. This should be a good news for OEMs as PC shipments have increased after eight quarters of declining shipments. This is due to the stabilization in developed markets was offset by a decline in emerging markets. “The PC market’s installed based has been declining as buyers switched to tablets and smartphones for entertainment and social media consumption. The 2Q14 results suggest that the consumer installed base restructuring peaked during 2013. This is a bad news for PC market as a whole because the sales continues to decline in India, which is one of the largest developing economies. According to the International Data Corporation. the overall India PC shipments for Q1 2014 stood at 2.03 million units, representing a year-on-year drop of -25.2% over Q1 2013. PCs have long been known for their great value.  This is part of the reason Microsoft was so successful.  Affordable PCs were produced at high scale and sold at a high volume allowed Microsoft to gain a large amount of marketshare in the early days of the PC industry.  Of course in an effort to make more money on low margins, build quality on PCs suffered along with a ruined experience with the introduction of crapware.  There was practically no innovation from the OEMs after laptops became mainstream.   The higher end of the PC market typically appealed to gamers.  The two leaders in that market , Alienware and VooDoo were bought by Dell and HP, respectively.
