Those Italian hackers over at Windows8italia.com have been stripping their M1 copy of Windows 8 to the bone to dig up clues to Microsoft’s next big OS. Their latest discovery is that the OS has a sensor API for detecting when humans are in front of it, suggesting that at the very least the device will accept camera input, and possible have face recognition like the Kinect has now. A slide deck  leaked earlier has already suggested Windows 8 will have the feature of allowing users to log on and switch user depending on facial recognition.  It appears this may very well be one of those experimental features that wind its way to an actual product. Microsoft Research has posted a video demonstrating their new real time face and pose recognition software. The OneVision technology indexes an entire movie frame by frame, tagging individuals along the way, and can cope with low resolution images at a distance, ideal for something like Kinect for example. The technology also works with multiple people in the frame, and I suspect it will not be long before it finds a place in the next Xbox Kinect game. Read more about it at Technet.com here.
