On August 26, 2014 HP announced a worldwide voluntary recall and replacement program in cooperation with various government regulatory agencies, for affected AC power cords distributed worldwide with HP and Compaq notebook and mini notebook computers, as well as with AC adapters provided with accessories such as docking stations, sold from September 2010 through June 2012. HP customers affected by this program will be eligible to receive a replacement AC power cord for each verified, recalled AC power cord at no cost. After China, now Russian government is trying to reduce the reliance on Microsoft and other US based tech companies in governmental agencies. The reason seems to be the same security issues cited by China. They fear that the backdoors and bugs in software will allow suppliers access to confidential data. Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Oracle and SAP had combined revenue of $8.1 billion from Russia last year, and if Russia is going to move forward with their current plans, then these companies may get affected on sales. Gartner today released their Worldwide PC shipments report which revealed that total shipments were 75.8 million units in the second quarter of 2014, a 0.1 percent increase from the second quarter of 2013. This should be a good news for OEMs as PC shipments have increased after eight quarters of declining shipments. Microsoft has confirmed former HP senior vice president Tony Prophet will be joining Microsoft as the new Windows Marketing Chief: “We can confirm Tony Prophet will be joining Microsoft as corporate vice president, Windows Marketing, reporting to Chris Capossela. Tony will focus on growing the Windows ecosystem and enabling our partners to be more successful building on Windows.” Prophet will join the company in May and is replacing Thom Gruhler, Corporate Vice President of Marketing for Windows. IDC today reported that worldwide PC shipments totaled 73.4 million units in the first quarter of 2014 (1Q14), a decline of -4.4% year on year as a result of continuing weakness in consumer and emerging market segments.
