The VideoLan KickStarter campaign has ended a great success with the team raising £47,056 in 30 days. Felix Paul Kühne, Lead Developer on VLC media player has released the following statement: Today, the kickstarter campaign run by several core members of the VLC development team ended. £47,056 was pledged by 3080 generous backers. We would like to thank everyone who made this possible! This is a tremendous and somewhat unexpected success. We are very pleased about it. In the last week, we’ve prepared our project management tools, determined hardware and software needs for the developers who will work on VLC for Windows 8, RT and Phone, and set up our major development milestones. We will start right away as soon as the campaign is over. We will perform detailed scheduling early next month and reach out to major IT corporations who offered technical support and testing devices during our campaign. ...

Demonstrating at least that there is a community of enthusiasts around Windows 8 Metro and Windows Phone, VideoLan’s VLC KickStarter fundraiser, which aimed to raise £40,000 in 30 days, has passed its goal with 5 days to spare. The VLC team writes: Dear backers, A few minutes ago, we passed our goal of £40,000 because of you! Thanks so much for the support from more than 2,500 backers like you! Right now, we are working on another update to lay out our additional ideas. We are enthusiastically looking forward to work on this project and providing the best VLC possible for you. Thanks! – The VLC for Windows 8 team Hopefully the enthusiasm of the community will also infect the VLC developers, who have targeted an April delivery of the software for Windows 8 Metro, to be followed by Windows RT and eventually Windows Phone. The Videolan team have posted an update on their KickStarter page after their fundraiser hit 90% of their £40,000 target with 7 days still to go. Standing at £36,615 at the time of writing, the team explained their plan to port VLC from Windows 8 Desktop to Windows 8 Metro, needed because the Windows ecosystem was moving in that direction, required portions of their code to be rewritten to meet Windows Metro ideals of responsiveness and the ability to wake and sleep as needed. Because VLC is an open source project the code will be re-usable by other projects making the same jump. VLC developer Geoffroy Couprie writes: Why am I excited to work on this port? This KickStarter will give us the opportunity to work full time on WinRT for a few months, and solve all these challenges for us, but also for other open source projects. We already ...

The VLC team have not been very forthcoming with updates, but they have now finally posted some new information, in the form of mock-ups of their Windows 8 Metro client. They noted that they are 70% to their target with 10 days to go, which is on track, but they of course still need your donations to actually make it. They also confirmed that after some work they now know their 3 month development time scale is realistic, meaning they should be able to deliver the app in April 2013. They are of course also still planning a Windows Phone 8 version of the app. Read the update and donate at KickStarter here. ...

Donations are rolling in for VLC for Windows 8 Metro, with the collection gaining more than £6,000 in the last 5 days. That may still leave the open source team, which are planning to create apps for Windows 8 x86, Windows RT and eventually Windows Phone 8 still short of their £40,000 ($64,000) target. Microsoft has already pledged support in the form of hardware, technical and design help, but for the finances the team are relying on the eventually users, that being us. Show your support and be listed as a contributor in the app, by making a small donation at Kickstarter UK here (they take $ as easy as £). ...
