America’s second largest school district made a big announcement last year that they will be giving all its students iPads. While students and teachers community welcomed the news, many education analysts questioned the effectiveness of iPads in classrooms. Now, Los Angeles school district has realized that iPads are not the best in the business when it comes to students. They are now allowing schools to choose from six different Windows laptop computers for their students instead of iPads. Lenovo today announced its results for fourth fiscal quarter ended March 31, 2014. Lenovo maintained its number one position in PCs, adding 2.1% of market share to post a record 17.7 percent total share for the full-year, while the industry saw a decline of 8 percent during this same period. Lenovo’s laptop PC business worldwide in the Q4 increased 16% year-over-year to US$4.8 billion and Lenovo’s desktop PC shipment grew 6.8 percent worldwide year-over-year, against an industry decline of 3.1 percent worldwide. Another important milestone for Lenovo is that they have surpassed Apple to take the number three position in PC shipments in the fourth quarter in the US for the first time. Digitimes today reported that Samsung will no longer launch conventional notebook models except few Chromebooks in 2015. Essentially, they are ending their R&D on new Windows laptops while they continue to sell their existing models. Samsung had a strong growth in Windows laptops segment 2 years back, but since then it has lost its game with Lenovo and decreasing consumer demand for laptops. Samsung Electronics has set a goal of shipping seven million notebooks globally in 2014, a reduction of 41.67% from the 12 million units shipped in 2013, and will no longer launch conventional notebook models except Chromebooks in 2015, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers. Samsung aimed to ship 17 million notebooks in 2013 but actually shipped 12 million units, the sources said. PCs have long been known for their great value.  This is part of the reason Microsoft was so successful.  Affordable PCs were produced at high scale and sold at a high volume allowed Microsoft to gain a large amount of marketshare in the early days of the PC industry.  Of course in an effort to make more money on low margins, build quality on PCs suffered along with a ruined experience with the introduction of crapware.  There was practically no innovation from the OEMs after laptops became mainstream.   The higher end of the PC market typically appealed to gamers.  The two leaders in that market , Alienware and VooDoo were bought by Dell and HP, respectively. Dell announced their refreshed line-up of latitude ultrabooks and laptops.  Honestly, I’m pretty unimpressed especially in terms of design.  Michael Dell is fairly focused on trying to take the company private, with a critical vote happening later this year.  Brandon Leblanc on the Windows Experience Blog reports: These new models are constructed with brushed aluminum, reinforced magnesium alloy, strong steel hinges, woven carbon fiber, durable powder-coated underside, spill-resistant keyboards and LCD seals. Microsoft is still to officially launch Windows 8 on the 26th October, but it seems the first Windows 8 laptops are already on sale, and from an unexpected source. The Home Shopping Network is offering two Gateway Windows 8 laptops, a 15.6 inch version for $649.95 and a 17.3 inch version for $699.95. The offer is set to expire soon and no delivery date was announced. Both laptops have Core i5 processors, 4 GB RAM and a 500 GB hard drive, and neither have a touch screen.
