Despite its strong product lineup and services, marketing is still one of the areas where Microsoft lags behind its rivals. In the past, each of Microsoft’s division was responsible for their own marketing. Windows team will spend their marketing budget on creating commercials that focuses on Windows OS alone whereas Office team will target Office specific features. As part of “One Microsoft” strategy, Microsoft recently unified the marketing team across the company. Today, Adweek reported that Microsoft is planning to overhaul its approach to marketing by shifting from product-specific ads to broader consumer and business-oriented campaigns. Adweek obtained this information from Microsoft’s RFP shared to ad agencies. Microsoft is searching for an agency team that “optimizes talent, creates process and execution efficiencies, and gives Microsoft the best leverage in the marketplace,” the RFP stresses. Particularly revealing, the document states that Microsoft “believes a holding company model consolidating most of its ...

Since then, Microsoft has focused on various issues like Gmail scanning user’s mail content for ad delivery, Gmail spamming its own users, privacy issues in Chrome, etc. Many of us are not a big fan of these kind of competitor bashing ads, but the ads are really working! When Microsoft revealed their next generation Surface devices last month, it was evident that Microsoft has changed the branding for Surface RT. Instead of ‘Surface RT’ and ‘Surface Pro’, it is now just ‘Surface 2′ and ‘Surface Pro 2′. It seems Microsoft has dropped the ‘RT’ branding from its second generation Surface to avoid consumer confusion. Microsoft’s product marketing manager for Surface, Jack Cowett revealed that one of the reasons for dropping the ‘RT’ branding was to avoid  consumer confusion. “We think that there was some confusion in the market last year on the difference between Surface RT and Surface Pro. We want to help make it easier for people, and these are two different products designed for two different people.” He also said that the new two stage kickstand feature is done as a result of direct customer feedback. Since people want to use their Surface as a laptop on their ...

While there are many positives and negatives one can list out for the announced Microsoft-Nokia deal, I have only one concern. The marketing team at Microsoft is completely different from the marketing team at Nokia. You can just tell the difference by observing them from the recent campaigns. Nokia’s marketing is always bold, straight-forward and nowadays takes on its competition directly and in-directly through various forms of marketing activities. It worked most of the time for Nokia and I fear Microsoft could change this. In his letter to Microsoft, Steve Ballmer revealed that Microsoft is planning to integrate global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. We are planning to integrate all global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. It is very important that we pursue a unified brand and advertising strategy as soon as possible. I don’t think Microsoft’s unified marketing strategy will work the way they expect. Marketing ...
