Microsoft started the Scroogled campaign against Google back in November. Since then, Microsoft has focused on various issues like Gmail scanning user’s mail content for ad delivery, Gmail spamming its own users, privacy issues in Chrome, etc. Many of us are not a big fan of these kind of competitor bashing ads, but the ads are really working! When Microsoft revealed their next generation Surface devices last month, it was evident that Microsoft has changed the branding for Surface RT. Instead of ‘Surface RT’ and ‘Surface Pro’, it is now just ‘Surface 2′ and ‘Surface Pro 2′. It seems Microsoft has dropped the ‘RT’ branding from its second generation Surface to avoid consumer confusion. Microsoft’s product marketing manager for Surface, Jack Cowett revealed that one of the reasons for dropping the ‘RT’ branding was to avoid  consumer confusion. “We think that there was some confusion in the market last year on the difference between Surface RT and Surface Pro. We want to help make it easier for people, and these are two different products designed for two different people.” He also said that the new two stage kickstand feature is done as a result of direct customer feedback. While there are many positives and negatives one can list out for the announced Microsoft-Nokia deal, I have only one concern. The marketing team at Microsoft is completely different from the marketing team at Nokia. You can just tell the difference by observing them from the recent campaigns. Nokia’s marketing is always bold, straight-forward and nowadays takes on its competition directly and in-directly through various forms of marketing activities. It worked most of the time for Nokia and I fear Microsoft could change this. In his letter to Microsoft, Steve Ballmer revealed that Microsoft is planning to integrate global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. We are planning to integrate all global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. It is very important that we pursue a unified brand and advertising strategy as soon as possible. I don’t think Microsoft’s unified marketing strategy will work the way they expect. Marketing ...

In a new ad Microsoft has targeted the browser on the iPad specifically as a bad experience and promoted IE10 on a tablet as built for touch and being “pretty amazing”, offering a “fast and fluid experience”. Safari is in fact one of the worse parts of the iPad, crashing constantly, and I think it is a pretty valid attack target, which should resonate with those looking for a new tablet. Continuing with their quest to make it so you can not turn on the TV without seeing Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 had a massive presence at the MTV Europe Music Awards. There presenters Heidi Klum and Sway used a massive Windows 8 touch screen to interact with viewers and keep up to date with what’s going on back stage. With Microsoft intending to roll out a big Windows Phone 8 campaign starting today featuring a variety of celebrities I suspect we can start to see the shape of Microsoft’s marketing push now – being associated with celebrities and hoping some of the cool will rub off. In the above video we have HP asked Michael Daube, executive director at CITTA, trying the HP ENVY x2. The video interestingly portrays the device as Laptop Plus, rather than a tablet with a keyboard, which in the early stages may be the best way to sell a Windows 8 hybrid. See another video in the series, showing Tiffany Cruikshank, yoga teacher and acupuncturist, trying the HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook, below. Do our readers think HP is now doing a better job selling their PCs running Windows 8? Let us know below. ...
