At the inaugural Code Conference (#CodeCon) where @karaswisher and @waltmossberg are engaging Microsoft CEO @satyanadella in a more than hour-long onstage conversation, there were lots of things discussed. When Kara questioned whether Microsoft has plans to spin off Xbox business, Satya Nadella replied that he has no plans to do anything different on Xbox than we are doing today. Kara: Will you spin off Xbox? Nadella: I have no intent to do anything different on Xbox than we are doing today. He notes that prior to Nokia, Xbox is where all of Microsoft’s hardware know-how came from. At the inaugural Code Conference (#CodeCon) where @karaswisher and @waltmossberg are engaging Microsoft CEO @satyanadella in a more than hour-long onstage conversation, there were lots of things discussed. When Kara asked whether they are going to sell Bing business to Yahoo in the future, he declined that Microsoft has no plans to sell Bing business to Yahoo. Kara on search: Are you still going to compete heavily against Google, and how? Nadella says the core value of Bing is a lot more than Bing.com. But, he says, Bing has 18 percent market share on its own, 30 percent with the Yahoo traffic it serves — about the market share of the iPhone. At the Recode Code Conference in Palos Verdes, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took stage to talk about Microsoft. During the interview, Microsoft demonstrated a breakthrough technology called Skype Translator. Nadella conducted a conversation with Skype chief Gurdeep Singh Pall, who was speaking German, while Skype provided real-time translation of the German into English and vice versa. Skype Translator results from decades of work by the industry, years of work by our researchers, and now is being developed jointly by the Skype and Microsoft Translator teams. The demo showed near real-time audio translation from English to German and vice versa, combining Skype voice and IM technologies with Microsoft Translator, and neural network-based speech recognition. Skype Translator is a great example of why Microsoft invests in basic research. A security research firm has exposed the Outlook.com Android mobile app does not do anything to ensure confidentiality of messages and attachments within the phone filesystem itself. The application we’re discussing here is Outlook.com free email service’s mobile client offered by Microsoft. This app is described as being created by Seven Networks in conjunction or in association with Microsoft (i.e. looks like it was outsourced.) The app allows users to access their Outlook.com email on Android devices. In the course of our research we found that the on-device email storage doesn’t really make any effort to ensure confidentiality of messages and attachments within the phone filesystem itself. After notifying Microsoft (vendor notification timeline is found at the end of this post) they disagreed that our concern was a direct responsibility of their software, in light of similar problems with iOS being deemed a concern by privacy advocates we thought it’d be a good idea to share what we ...
