With the Nokia/Microsoft deal officially closing  on April 25, Stephen Elop has made his triumphant return to Microsoft. Elop is now the executive vice president (EVP) of the Microsoft Devices Group overseeing an expanded devices business that includes Lumia smartphones and tablets, Nokia mobile phones, Xbox hardware, Surface, Perceptive Pixel products, and accessories.  Other Nokia executives joining Microsoft include Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber. They will report to Elop for the time being. Elop will be part of Nadella’s senior leadership team which includes Terry Myerson, Qi Lu, Amy Hood, Lisa Brummel, Chris Capossela, Scott Guthrie, Mark Penn, Eric Rudder, Harry Shum, Brad Smith, Kirill Tatarinov, and Kevin Turner. Nokia today halted the sales of Lumia 2520 Windows tablet over faulty charger issue. Read the press release from Nokia below for more details. Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced a product advisory for the European and UK variant of the AC-300 charger, which is used exclusively with the Lumia 2520 tablet. A new report claims that then Cloud EVP Satya Nadella, Tony Bates, along with Bill Gates and the Microsoft board all initially opposed Steve Ballmer’s plan to acquire Nokia.  Nadella would later change his mind but Bates remained vehemently opposed. Tony Bates is no longer with the company, Gates stepped down as chairman, while Ballmer is now on the board and Satya Nadella is currently CEO. If this report is indeed true, I have a deepened respect for Steve Ballmer. As Microsoft and Nokia are close to completing the acquisition deal, both the companies are aligning themselves to start working on respective companies from Day 1 once the deal is completed. Nokia has already started reporting Devices and Services division under separate category in its financial reports. Nokia’s HERE team, CTO office has moved to different campus in Finland. Microsoft is also making some changes to accommodate the incoming Nokia group. The main change is that Stephen Elop will become the EVP of Devices division at Microsoft. In a bit of good news for Microsoft, the European Union has approved the Microsoft/Nokia deal without any conditions.  Regulators in the United States, India, Russia, Israel and Turkey have also approved the Nokia deal. 99.7% of Nokia shareholders approved the deal two weeks ago.
