While  we generally do not put too much faith in analyst reports, sometimes they are amusing.  A new report by a Finnish financial analyst believes that former Nokia CEO Jorma Ollila could join Microsoft’s board. “Ollila is, for all his strengths and weaknesses, a pioneer,” Jukka Oksaharju, of Nordic savings bank Nordnet, said. “Joining Microsoft’s board wouldn’t be a surprise in itself, but it would be the crowning achievement of Nokia’s sale and Ollila’s career,” Oksaharju said. “Who would have more experience in global telecommunication business? The entire industry was created during his reign.” Currently Ollila sits on the board of many companies including Ford.  Given Ollila’s financial background he certainly would fit in with many other members of the board.  One theory is that if Alan Mulally becomes Microsoft’s next CEO he could bring over Ollila to Microsoft’s board room.  We know that Ollila certainly gets along with Ballmer and was intstrumental ...

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from longtime reader Bugbog.  With Blackberry announcing a ~40% reduction in workforce (4500 jobs!) and an exit from the consumer market, I think this is a timely piece.  We’re seeing an end to an era where companies thrived by having all their eggs in making mobile devices.  You really need a strong ecosystem and diverse company to survive.  I think many people overlook how vertically integrated Samsung really is and how they came to be dominant.  Now on to a brief look back at history.  –Suril Nokia, RIM (Blackberry), Motorola, Palm/HP, and HTC. All pioneers and trailblazers in the mobility age. All made great profits from their ventures. However they all currently have one, or a number of things in common; They are all either in a downward spiral, losing money, or have been broken up and sold! What the heck happened? The greatest threat to ...

Over this labor day weekend I was working on an editorial analyzing some of the implications of getting Stephen Elop onboard as Microsoft’s next CEO.  Spending time with family kept me quite busy and I never quite finished it as early as I had intended.  And then this morning I get to work, I see a message from Pradeep, BOOM, Microsoft has acquired Nokia.  Well I hate for my editorial to go to complete waste, so I’m going to share what my thoughts were before the announcement and publish part of it anyways.  I made some incorrect assumptions in the editorial I was writing, but I got some things correct too.  Here it is for those interested in its rough, unfinished form: Stephen Elop.  Stephen Elop.  Stephen Elop.  Now say it with me, Stephen Elop.  I have not gone a two seconds, since Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer’s retirement announcement, without hearing the Nokia ...

While there are many positives and negatives one can list out for the announced Microsoft-Nokia deal, I have only one concern. The marketing team at Microsoft is completely different from the marketing team at Nokia. You can just tell the difference by observing them from the recent campaigns. Nokia’s marketing is always bold, straight-forward and nowadays takes on its competition directly and in-directly through various forms of marketing activities. It worked most of the time for Nokia and I fear Microsoft could change this. In his letter to Microsoft, Steve Ballmer revealed that Microsoft is planning to integrate global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. We are planning to integrate all global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. It is very important that we pursue a unified brand and advertising strategy as soon as possible. I don’t think Microsoft’s unified marketing strategy will work the way they expect. Marketing ...

Microsoft today posted the full transcript of the webcast in which Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Terry Myerson, Stephen Elop and others discuss Nokia/Microsoft deal and answers questions from analysts. Here is the full transcript of Q&A. STEVE BALLMER: Fantastic. Chris, I think that pretty much wraps up and we would love a chance to take some questions. OPERATOR: Walter Pritchard, Citigroup, your line is open. WALTER PRITCHARD: Great. Thanks for taking the question. Steve Ballmer, on the tablet side, obviously, we could say many of the same things as you’ve put into this slide deck as rationale for doing an acquisition on the phone side as we could say about the tablet side including picking up more gross margin. I’m wondering how this transaction impacts the strategy going forward in tablets and whether or not you need to, in a sense, double down further on first-party hardware in the tablet ...

Nokia is working on a Windows tablet and it was reported to have Asus Vivo Tab style keyboard dock/cover. Here is the information we about it. The 10.1 inch tablet will have USB and HDMI-out, and also cellular connectivity, with 10 hours battery life which can  be fast-charged to 50% in a short period. The real innovation however will come from the accompanying cover, which The Verge noted will snap in place and will double battery life, provide a keyboard and also a kickstand for the tablet. The cover will also provide two USB ports. While the cover sounds rather fantastical, it is of note that the Asus Vivotab RT (pictured above) provides a “cover” with very similar functionality, and which effectively turns the Vivotab into a laptop. Given that Nokia cover also includes a battery and keyboard it is difficult to see how it could have a much different ...
