Nvidia today announced their new GeForce 800M notebook CPUs offering performance improvement of  60% over the previous generation. These chips comes with a new feature called NVIDIA Battery Boost which will allow gamers to play up to 2x longer gaming on their laptops. Here’s how it works: instead of your notebook pushing every component to its max, Battery Boost targets a user defined frame rate, such as 30 FPS. The driver level governor takes over from there, and operates all your system components, including CPU, GPU, and memory at peak efficiency, while maintaining a smooth, playable experience. The last major version of Microsoft’s graphics platform DirectX 11 was announced about 6 years back. Since then the desktop graphics API development has stagnated. During this time, AMD has developed their own set of APIs called Mantle. OpenGL/OpenCL has come a long way since then. Last week we reported that Microsoft is making some announcement about their next generation DirectX platform at Game Developers Conference in March. Windows RT, the new version of Windows that runs on ARM processors has started shipping to consumers via new tablets such as Microsoft Surface, Asus VivoTab RT, etc,. NVIDIA’s chips powers many devices running Windows 8 and Windows RT. In a recent blog post, NVIDIA discussed about its long standing relationship with Microsoft and the work they did to bring Windows RT running on Tegra 3 processors. Windows RT marks the first time that PCs have been able to take advantage of incredibly efficient ARM-based processors like Tegra 3, enabling two weeks of connected standby time. The Samsung tablet Microsoft handed out to developers at BUILD 2 days ago ran on an Intel Core i5 processor, and so far not much has been seen live of Windows 8 running on ARM. Thisismynext managed to catch a demo of Windows 8 running on Nvidia’s reference tablet running on a quad-core Kal-El processor and found that the performance was quite comparable to Intel’s Core i5 chip, at least when it came to the smoothness of the user interface.
