Microsoft today confirmed that Office 2013 SP1 is coming early next year. It will include performance improvements, feature updates and improved compatibility with Windows 8.1. Microsoft today announced a new project called Office Remote. It is a collaboration between Microsoft Research and the Microsoft Office engineering team that will allow you to control Office apps on your PC from your Windows Phone device. “Office Remote turns your phone into a smart remote that interacts with Microsoft Office on your PC,” says Bert Van Hoof, an Office group program manager. “The app lets you control Word, Excel, and PowerPoint from across the room so you can walk around freely during presentations.” “With Office Remote,” Van Hoof adds, “you can start your PowerPoint presentation, advance the slides, see your speaker notes, and control an on-screen laser pointer with a touch of your finger—all from your phone. Microsoft today announced the expanded availability of Office 365 to 17 new countries and 4 new languages. With this expansion, Office 365 is now available in 123 markets, additionally 120-day trials are available in 18 markets where paid subscriptions may become available in the future. The new languages are Indonesian, Kazakh, Hindi, and Hebrew, bringing the number of Office 365 languages to 40, including English. New trial markets include: Palestinian Territories, Congo (DRC), Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Botswana, Namibia, Curaçao, Faroe Islands, Monaco, St. Kitts and Nevis, Ethiopia, Uganda, Zambia, Afghanistan, and Tanzania. So, now you can contribute and edit documents simultaneously with your friends and family in the Word Web App, PowerPoint Web App or Excel Web App. You can now see the real-time presence which helps you see where your co-authors are working in the document. Also, there is a new ability to see changes to text and formatting as they happen which will help you and your co-authors stay on the same page.   Apple had a media event yesterday in the US where it announced a new wave of updated products across its portfolio. During its presentation, Apple executives compared Microsoft’s strategy with theirs to make their point. I disagree with all three cases they made against Microsoft. Here are they, 1) Apple CEO Tim Cook made the following statement to make the point that they are clearly focused on developing MacOS and MacBooks. “Our competition is different: They’re confused. They chased after netbooks. Now they’re trying to make PCs into tablets and tablets into PCs. Who knows what they’ll do next? I can’t answer that question, but I can tell you that we’re focused.” My take on it: Windows OEMs were focused on selling netbooks because it really sold well. One year ago today, Microsoft announced its acquisition of Yammer. Microsoft has begun to integrate Yammer into Office 365 and in just 12 months: Users have grown by 55 percent to approximately 8 million registered seats. User activity (as measured by messages, groups and files) has roughly doubled year over year. Paid networks have grown over 200 percent year over year.
