InterDigital has now lost its patent case against Nokia at the U.S. International Trade Commission. Since Microsoft has acquired Nokia’s Devices division, Microsoft agreed to assume all of Nokia’s liabilities and have “sole control over the defense, including sole authority to resolve this action.” Even though InterDigital pledged to appeal against this ruling, this is a set back for them. ITC found that Nokia’s devices didn’t violate InterDigital patent rights. InterDigital and Nokia were already in a patent dispute back in 2006 and they settled on it. InterDigital again sued Nokia for some different patents few years later and Nokia refused to pay patent royalties for them. The agreement is simple, patents of LOT network member companies cannot be used to sue other LOT network member companies even after patent transfer to other companies. Microsoft today announced that they have signed patent licensing agreement with Canon and the deal deal will enable further collaboration on R&D.
