Nokia Corporation today reported their interim report for Q2 2014 and January-June 2014. Nokia ended Q2 2014 with a strong balance sheet and solid cash position with gross cash of EUR 9.0 billion and net cash of EUR 6.5 billion compared to EUR 6.9 billion and EUR 2.1 billion, respectively, at the end of Q1 2014. Among the three main divisions in the Nokia, Nokia Technologies group does research and development building on the strength of industry-leading patent portfolio. They license their technologies to other companies. Google has joined Asana, Canon, Dropbox, Newegg and SAP to announce the formation of the License on Transfer (LOT) Network, a cooperative patent-licensing agreement that is expected to cut down on patent troll litigation. The agreement is simple, patents of LOT network member companies cannot be used to sue other LOT network member companies even after patent transfer to other companies. The LOT agreement is a new kind of royalty-free cross-license meant to address these growing systemic problems. Member companies receive a license when the patents are transferred out of the LOT group. That means that companies retain their right to enforce a patent so long as they retain ownership of it. Microsoft today announced that they have signed patent licensing agreement with Canon and the deal deal will enable further collaboration on R&D. This is a cross licensing agreement as opposed to what Microsoft usually signs with Android device OEMs. Microsoft also highlighted that the deal involves certain digital imaging and mobile consumer products. A Microsoft patent filed back in December today became public which is titled “AUTO-STEREOSCOPIC AUGMENTED REALITY DISPLAY”. Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services business has been cleared to close in 16 markets where the deal was approved without any conditions. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) however approved the deal on certain conditions as they feared Microsoft may use its dominant patent resource to get more royalty out of Chinese OEMs. You can read Microsoft’s commitments is here.
