IDC today reported that worldwide PC shipments totaled 73.4 million units in the first quarter of 2014 (1Q14), a decline of -4.4% year on year as a result of continuing weakness in consumer and emerging market segments. Windows XP was one of the main reasons for growth in commercial market segments as Microsoft is ending the support for OS. Lenovo maintained its lead in total worldwide PC shipments, followed by HP and Dell. Acer and Asus are the biggest losers in this segment as they are transitioning towards tablets and mobile devices. “Worldwide PC shipments have now declined for eight consecutive quarters as a result of shifting technology usage and competition (notably with tablets & smartphones) as well as economic pressures (including high unemployment, slow growth & investment, tight credit, and currency fluctuations) related to the Great Recession, sovereign debt crises, and their related impact on international trade,” said Loren Loverde, Vice ...

Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft is cutting the price of Windows 8.1 OS license to OEMs by 70% for low-cost PCs and tablets. This new discount program is one of the main effort Microsoft is taking to rival the adoption of Google’s Chromebooks and Android devices. Windows 8.1 license generally costs $50 for OEMs, but Microsoft pays them marketing incentives every year which would bring the effective Windows 8.1 license cost around $30-$40. According to this new report, OEMs will be charged $15 to license Windows 8.1 and preinstall it on devices that retail for less than $250. This new pricing scheme will apply only for the products that meet the price limit, with no restrictions on the size or type of device. Microsoft, which named Satya Nadella as CEO earlier this month, is seeking to speed up development and introduction of new devices. It won’t require products that use the cheaper licensing to complete logo certification, ...

Most consumers are familiar with “2-in-1″ PCs, which can either be a tablet or laptop.  But Toshiba has stepped it up a notch and unveiled a 5-in-1 PC concept.  Toshiba calls it a “shape-shifting” PC and it has three parts, a screen, keyboard and kickstand.  The kickstand contains the motherboard and the three parts can be arranged for different usage scenarios. As expected the PC take the form of a traditional laptop.  It can also take the form of a tablet, one with the keyboard detached and one with it folded back.  Two other modes include a “Presentation/TV” mode that involves using the kickstand, and a “Canvas” mode that lets the user flip the attached keyboard 270 degrees, making the device better for drafting with a stylus. As this is just a concept, there is no word on pricing or availability.  Other PC makers also are promoting convertible devices. At CES, ...

Gartner released its report on PC shipments for the third quarter of 2013.  For the sixth consecutive quarter PC fell, a whopping -8.6% decline with 80.3 million units shipped.  The report had a more negative outlook than IDC’s report.  This is the worst back-to-school PC season since 2008. Similar to IDC’s report, Gartner saw Lenovo, HP, and Dell grow while Acer & ASUS declined.  Gartner believes the holiday season will be a “key indicator” for the future of the two companies. Acer declined 22.6% compared to a year ago while Asus saw a 22.5% decline.  Asus’ tablet shipments were nearly equal to its mobile PC shipments.  It appears the decline of the netbook market is hurting both Acer and Asus. In the US 16.1 million units shipped in the third quarter, a 3.5% increase compared to last year.  Apple actually lost market share this quarter.  According to Gartner new form ...

A report by IDC showed a year-over-year decline in the PC market of -7.6 for the third quarter of 2013 with worldwide PC shipments of 81.6 million units.  This beats IDCs original expectation of a -9.5% decline in the PC market and is slightly more positive than Gartner’s report.     Lenovo, Dell, and HP had an uptick in business while Acer and ASUS continue to struggle.  “The third quarter was pretty close to forecast, which unfortunately doesn’t reflect much improvement in the PC market, or potential for near-term growth,” said Loren Loverde, Vice President Worldwide PC Trackers. “Whether constrained by a weak economy or being selective in their tech investments, buyers continue to evaluate options and delay PC replacements. Despite being a little ahead of forecast, and the work that’s being done on new designs and integration of features like touch, the third quarter results suggest that there’s still ...
