With the aim of bringing more people online, Microsoft is now offering free PCs with Windows and Office pre-installed to TalkTalk broadband customers. The offer is part of Microsoft’s Digital Inclusion Scheme (Go ON UK) offered through a dedicated website called getonline@home. The package is SimplyBroadband which carries a 12-month contract, provides up to 16mbps download speed and doesn’t have any limits. However, once you factor in the line rental for a year as well as equipment costs, the total cost of ownership for the first year shoots to £217.40 or just over £18. Since it is a free PC, don’t expect any top of the line specs. In a recent email promotion sent to consumers, HP is promoting its PCs with the line “Windows 7 PCs on sale, just in time for school.” Also, several Windows 7 PCs are still on sale at HP’s website. Lenovo today announced its results for fourth fiscal quarter ended March 31, 2014. Lenovo maintained its number one position in PCs, adding 2.1% of market share to post a record 17.7 percent total share for the full-year, while the industry saw a decline of 8 percent during this same period. Lenovo’s laptop PC business worldwide in the Q4 increased 16% year-over-year to US$4.8 billion and Lenovo’s desktop PC shipment grew 6.8 percent worldwide year-over-year, against an industry decline of 3.1 percent worldwide. Another important milestone for Lenovo is that they have surpassed Apple to take the number three position in PC shipments in the fourth quarter in the US for the first time. Microsoft’s latest cybersecurity report, released Wednesday, revealed a 70 percent decline in the number of severe vulnerabilities that were exploited in Microsoft products between 2010 and 2013. New research conducted by Trustworthy Computing’s Security Science team shows a 70 percent decline in the number of severe vulnerabilities (those that can enable remote code execution) that were exploited in Microsoft products between 2010 and 2013. This is a clear indication that newer products are providing better protection, even in cases where vulnerabilities exist. While this trend is promising, cybercriminals aren’t giving up. Our data shows that in the second half of 2013 there was a noticeable increase in cybercriminal activity where attackers used deceptive practices. Yesterday we reported on new rumors regarding Windows 8.2 (or Windows 8.1 Update 2 or Autumn Update) and Windows 9. Russian leaker WZOR has asserted that Windows 8.2 is likely to be released this fall. Mary Jo Foley says she has independently heard it may be released as early as August (2014). Previous to Windows 8.1, Microsoft typically took three years to release the next version of Windows. The exception to this was Windows Vista. It took nearly 5 years after the initial release of Windows XP until Windows Vista came out. Of course the issue is slightly more nuanced, Windows XP SP2 could have considered a new version of Windows and Project Longhorn was scrapped and Windows Vista was written in about 2.5 years.
