We have heard many piracy cases related to Microsoft products in the past. Today, a youth from Chennai India was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation. The Cyber Cell of CBU arrested this guy named Prabhu to produce him in Egmore court. Officials suspected that he might have hacked into government websites which use Microsoft’s software. CBI has seized hard disks and router that were used by the accused along with number of Microsoft Product Kits and other documents from his house. They have even freezed his bank account used by him. CBI has registered a case under different sections of the IT Act, 2000 on the allegations that Microsoft Volume License Service Centre (VLSC) agreements in respect of overseas and Indian customers of the Microsoft were being accessed to steal product keys and selling them online, said a press release. LeakID is a company that monitors illegal links and sources, send automated takedown notices to ISPs hosting infringing links and websites. Microsoft uses their services to protect their products including Windows, Office, etc,. Microsoft has been one of the most active DMCA notice senders and they have asked Google to remove more than 10 million infringing URLs from its indexes in the past year alone. Companies like LeakID which sends notices on behalf of Microsoft have sent some embarrassing takedown notices. LeakID asked Google for the removal of Microsoft’s own website, its Wikipedia entry and an Open Source project website. Betanews reports that the Windows 8 store’s app protection has been well and truly cracked, allowing even novice users to make trial apps free full versions with only a click of a button. The hack called Wsservice_crk was released on October 30, 2012 on the My Digital Life forum and allows users to crack Windows Store applications, sideload unsigned apps so that they can be run on Windows 8 Metro and the means to create app packages that can be further redistributed. A relatively easy hack has been uncovered which results in a free installation of Windows 8. The hack relies on the Windows Media Centre upgrade replacing an illegitimate key used to install the OS. First a pirate would install Windows 8 with any key and activate this using a key management system which accepts any key, which should result 180 days of Windows 8 use before the KMS is forced to call home and verify the install keys. Next our eye-patched user simply applies for the free upgrade for Windows 8 Pro that adds Windows Media Centre, which does not check if the current installation key is valid.
