Microsoft today announced that they are releasing Windows 8.1 RTM build to MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Earlier, Microsoft announced that they are not going to release RTM bits on MSDN before the public release in October, but due to negative feedback from partners and developers, they reversed their decision. Based on the feedback from you and our partners, we’re pleased to announce that we will be making available our current Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro RTM builds (as well as Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM builds) to the developer and IT professional communities via MSDN and TechNet subscriptions. The current Windows 8.1 Enterprise RTM build will be available through MSDN and TechNet for businesses later this month. For developers, we are also making available the Visual Studio 2013 Release Candidate, which you can download here. For more on building and testing apps for Windows 8.1, head on over to ...

Sources close to cnBeta have confirmed that the Windows 8.1 RTM version number  6.3.9600. Typically the final build number, from Vista on up, has been evenly divisible by 16 and is artificially bumped up to ensure this happens. You may recall that the Windows 8.0 RTM build number was 9200.  Windows 95′s build number was 950, Windows 98′s build number was 1998, Windows 98 SE was 2222, and Windows XP was 2600 (reference to hacker magazine), Windows Vista 6000 and Windows 7 was 7600. Screenshots of build 9484, recently released to OEMs, have recently leaked and build 9477 leaked to the web a few days back.  Microsoft-news can confirm Microsoft is now working on the RTM branch of Windows 8.1, no new features are being added, only critical bugs are being fixed, especially those that are high priority for OEMs.  As previously reported Windows 8.1 will be released around October 18th. A report by Neowin claims Microsoft will RTM Windows 8.1 shortly after August 23rd.  MSDN, TechNet Suscribers, and developers will not get early access to the build, only large OEMs.  Microsoft will release Windows 8.1 to the Windows Store on October 17th and retail box copies will be available starting October 18th.  Windows Server 2012 R2 will also launch the 18th of October. The recently leaked Windows 8.1 build (9471) was an RTM branch build.  It appears Microsoft is making good on its promise to release a new version of Windows every year.  Now if Windows can do a yearly release, why can’t Windows Phone do one even faster…that may be a discussion for another time. Lucky Technet and MSDN subscribers can now get their grubby hands on the final version of Windows 8, as will be on sale on the 26th October.
