  NPD today released their latest game console sales numbers in the US for December. Microsoft’s Xbox One emerged as the No.1 selling console in the US market. Microsoft sold 908,000 units in December. Also, Xbox 360 continued to see sales with 643,000 units sold in December, putting it in the No.3 spot overall.   Asus CEO Jonney Shih has told AllThingsD that they are not happy with the Windows RT growth so far. He told that “The result is not very promising,” referring to both Microsoft’s Surface and Asus VivoTab RT. However, Asus is not stopping the developement of new Windows RT products. But they are putting all of their time and energy into devices that use Intel chips, since lots of people still prefers them. He also noted that Microsoft also made their mistakes such as removing the Start button and menu completely, etc,. But Shih isn’t giving up on Windows products. While Microsoft has never been very open about Windows Phone sales, they are quite happy to trumpet their Windows 8 achievements. Tammi Reller, Chief Financial and Chief Marketing Officer for Windows announced that since the launch in late October of Windows 8 they have sold 60 million licenses to the OS. The statement was made at the JP Morgan Tech Forum at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 8. The figure includes "sell in to OEMs for new PCs" and upgrades, said Reller, also saying this was roughly in line with Windows 7 sales. Speaking at Dell World customer conference in Austin, Texas, Dell CEO Michael Dell says that he’s seeing strong demand for computers and tablets running Windows 8. “The interest in Windows 8 is quite high, even among commercial customers” who tend to be slower to install new software, he said. No-one except Microsoft really knows how well the Surface is selling, but speculation is rife. Detwiler Fenton, a Boston-based brokerage firm, said in a research note today that Microsoft is likely to sell just 500,000 to 600,000 Surface RTs in the December quarter. The analyst, a bit like Steve Ballmer, blamed it on poor distribution of the tablet. “Lack of distribution is killing the product,” Detwiler Fenton explained. “Mixed reviews and a [$499] starting price tag certainly don’t help, but lack of retail exposure at Best Buy and others is severely depressing sales.” Potential buyers are not able to get a hands-on with the device themselves, which can be a deal breaker with a new product like the Microsoft Surface. While we have reports from the NPD and elsewhere of slow Windows 8 sales, it seems Black Friday (23rd November) had a pretty distinct effect on the installed base of Windows 8 PCs, as can be seen from the above StatCounter data shows. While the days leading up to Black Friday had Windows 8 running below 1% US net usage, Thanks Giving and Black Friday saw a large number of new Windows 8 PCs hitting the market, taking its US share above 2%.   Market research firm NPD today released their data on hardware sales in US market. Sales of Windows based devices in the last month are down by 21% compared to the same period a year ago in US. Sales of laptops running Windows declined by 24% and Windows Desktop devices sales were down by 9%. NPD also mentioned that Windows 8 tablet sales “have been almost non-existent. Asus’s Chief Financial Officer David Chang has complained of poor demand for their Windows 8 laptops. “Demand for Windows 8 is not that good right now,” said he said, noting that demand ramp-up for Windows 8 touch notebooks was slow. Asus has been less vocal in their criticism of Windows 8 than Acer, and has produced a number of low-cost Windows 8 touch devices, so their statement should likely be taken seriously. Their delay of the high-end Asus Taichi may be a consequence of this experience. Microsoft is however in the midst of a $1.5 billion marketing campaign for the OS, which will hopefully educate the public as to the advantages of the OS and stimulate sales, and increased penetration after Christmas should also help normalize the new UI and help ameliorate concerns the general public has about the OS.
