While we have reports from the NPD and elsewhere of slow Windows 8 sales, it seems Black Friday (23rd November) had a pretty distinct effect on the installed base of Windows 8 PCs, as can be seen from the above StatCounter data shows. While the days leading up to Black Friday had Windows 8 running below 1% US net usage, Thanks Giving and Black Friday saw a large number of new Windows 8 PCs hitting the market, taking its US share above 2%. While the number reduced over the next week,indicating that Windows 8 users are mainly at home rather than at work, it returned to 2.12% yesterday, indicating the new level was real and not just an artefact of increased usage over the holiday break.   Market research firm NPD today released their data on hardware sales in US market. Sales of Windows based devices in the last month are down by 21% compared to the same period a year ago in US. Sales of laptops running Windows declined by 24% and Windows Desktop devices sales were down by 9%. NPD also mentioned that Windows 8 tablet sales “have been almost non-existent. Asus’s Chief Financial Officer David Chang has complained of poor demand for their Windows 8 laptops. “Demand for Windows 8 is not that good right now,” said he said, noting that demand ramp-up for Windows 8 touch notebooks was slow. Asus has been less vocal in their criticism of Windows 8 than Acer, and has produced a number of low-cost Windows 8 touch devices, so their statement should likely be taken seriously. Their delay of the high-end Asus Taichi may be a consequence of this experience. Microsoft is however in the midst of a $1.5 billion marketing campaign for the OS, which will hopefully educate the public as to the advantages of the OS and stimulate sales, and increased penetration after Christmas should also help normalize the new UI and help ameliorate concerns the general public has about the OS. The number is the first official mention of the sales rate of the OS after Microsoft revealed that it sold 4 million licenses in the 3 days after the launch, indicating the run rate has remained about the same as after the launch- quite an achievement. Paul Thurrott, who has previously posted that  Windows 8 Sales were Well Below Microsoft’s Projections, and that Microsoft blamed the OEMs, have today expanded on this. He noted “the one thing that is consistent is that the company does in fact blames PC makers internally.” He continues, saying “while PC makers had announced a wide range of launch PCs and devices, many weren’t even delivered to retail in time for the Windows 8 launch” and that  “PC makers did not manufacture PCs and devices in the quantities needed to support the Windows 8 launch.” We find the explanation pretty believable, having ourselves found the most attractive Windows 8 hybrid models not available in stores. Australian IDC market analyst Amy Cheah, who has spoken to local retailers, vendors and channel partners as part of her work compiling sales numbers, said Windows 8 take-up was "not as strong as Microsoft would like it to be". So far Microsoft has not released any sales figures for the Microsoft Surface RT, but in Microsoft’s first comment on the performance of the device, Steve Ballmer has told Le Parisien that sales of the Microsoft Surface "are starting modestly." Microsoft blamed this more on a lack of distribution rather than demand, noting that the device is only being sold through Microsoft Stores, where the tablet is in fact often on short supply. Talking about the shortages, he said "It’s a good sign," adding that Microsoft "will fix this problem quickly" and that the increase in capacity is part of the company’s strategy. It seems the prophets of doom may have been wrong about demand for the Microsoft Surface, as the cheapest of the 3 packages have now sold out on pre-order, and have gone on back order. The $499 tablet, sold without the touch cover, is now on 3 weeks back order (which presumably means about 2 weeks after the other Surface tablets are delivered). Microsoft is rumoured to have ordered up to 5 million Surface tablets for Q4 2012, so hopefully this level of interest will continue and help make the RT platform a success.
