Stephen Felice, President and chief commercial officer said the following, I’ve been meeting with lots of customers who continue to say that they’re needing to prioritize security and manageability as they try to roll out tablets in their environment. According to research firm IHS, Microsoft Surface 32GB costs $271 to build it and TouchCover costs just $16 to build. Microsoft Surface’s main components include a Tegra 3 processor chip from Nvidia, and a display and memory chips from Samsung. Samsung appears to be having a healthy profit from Surface by supplying display, the memory chips and the battery, pocketing about $137 (almost half of total Surface cost). As every other OEM do, Microsoft seems to be profiting more from the TouchCover keyboard accessory. TouchCover includes chips from Atmel and Freescale Semiconductor and since it’s a compelling accessory for users, Microsoft is trying to squeeze more profit margin from it. MSNerd, long time Microsoft leaker, has passed on a little tip about the next version of Windows on ARM. Currently Windows on ARM runs on NVidia, Qualcomm and TI processors, which leaves OEMs like Samsung unable to use processors from their own supply chain. According to MSNerd, in the next update to Windows Nokia and Samsung will be able to use processors from their favourite providers – in Nokia’s case ST-Ericsson’s Novathor processor, and in Samsung’s case its own Exynos processor and SOC. The 11.6 inch tablet with 64 GB of storage also interestingly comes with 12 months of free AT&T data usage, suggesting developers got a pretty good deal when they were given the devices for free. The Android Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is banned in Germany Samsung’s Android tablet ambitions took an other knock in Germany today when the court there banned the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Presiding judge Johanna Brueckner-Hoffmann said there was a "clear impression of similarity" between the Apple and the Samsung products, citing the "minimalist, modern form" of the two firms’ products, with flat screens and rounded edges. Samsung, who is appealing, said "We are disappointed with this ruling and believe it severely limits consumer choice in Germany." While the ban only extends to Germany Samsung has problems elsewhere in Europe also. In the Netherlands, a court in the Hague banned three Samsung telephone models on August 24 following an Apple suit. Samsung launched a counter-claim, due to be heard by the same court on September 26. Apple is currently asking the ITC to block imports to the United ...
