During a Reddit AmA on new Surface devices back in September 2013, Surface team confirmed that they are working on LTE version of Surface devices. Why was LTE not included on neither Surface nor Surface Pro? We didn’t talk about it today, but Surface 2 will be launching an awesome LTE SKU early next year! Looks like the time has come. A Surface device with AT&T LTE has now passed through the FCC which again confirms that we are closer to launch. We can expect the device either in March or April. FCC published the Surface with LTE documents just today and since it comes with confidentiality request, we have very less details on the device. Neowin noted in the testing report that the device is running Windows RT OS. “EUT driver software installed during testing was Windows RT8.1 Preview Build 943”. I guess the device should be identical to current Surface 2 with an added option for cellular. What do ...

In a post on the Surface blog, Bryson Gordon, a director on the Surface team wrote: Like a lot of Microsoft-ies, I am the resident tech support contact for my extended family. This means that when my in-laws’ old laptop needed some TLC, I took it down to the team at the Microsoft Store, University Village to get it taken care. Outside of getting it running like new, a few of the associates starting talking with pride about one of their own, Jonathan Velasquez, and what he could do with the Surface Music Kit. I left my email address and later that night, after the doors closed, (you’ll notice in the video it is 9:18pm), Jonathan sent me this video. I’ll let it speak for itself. The Surface Music Kit may launch at the Build conference in early April.  Currently Microsoft is having a tough time keeping the Surface, Surface ...

The New York Times published their review of the Surface Pro 2 & Surface 2 today.  Even though the author, Bob Tedeschi, is an Apple developer, he gave the next generation Surfaces a relatively objective look and was fairly positive about both devices.  It is amazing what can be accomplished with David Pogue finally leaving the New York Times.  I am looking forward to Walt Mossberg leaving the Wall Street Journal too.  Here are some pull-quotes: But the second iteration of the Surface, which went on sale in late October, most of those downers have been addressed. The new Surface includes Outlook, an upgraded battery, a kickstand with two viewing angles instead of just one and faster USB ports, and other goodies. It has roughly the same thickness and weight as the iPad — it weighs 1.5 pounds without the cover — and the overall screen size is 10.6 inches, ...

Often we come across comparisons of Microsoft Surface with Apple iPad. While both of them are meant to be tablets, Microsoft Surface running Windows RT is much more powerful than an Apple iPad. When you compare recently released Apple iPad Air and Microsoft Surface 2, I think Surface 2 offers lot more value to most of the consumers with full web browser support, USB port and kickstand built-in and more. This fan made video released yesterday shows the capabilities of Surface 2. In this video I show off my favorite features in the Microsoft Surface 2, with windows 8.1 RT. I show off voice control (windows speech recognition), multiple monitor support, and a variety of accessories via USB hub (including external hard drive, mouse, keyboard, and Xbox 360 controller integration). I show how I connect the Surface 2 to my HDTV as well as wireless casting of music and video! ...

Both Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro now features 10.6” ClearType HD(1080p) displays with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Even though the resolution is not high enough to compete with other tablets out there, Microsoft has taken care of other aspects of display to make the viewing experience better. The display on the new devices is gorgeous, and the engineering work to produce gorgeousness isn’t trivial. It requires focus on far more than pixel count – things like size and aspect ratio, optical bonding of the display to the cover glass for reduced reflection, contrast ratio, viewing angles, color depth, gray scale, color reproduction, luminance, and backlight uniformity. Microsoft today posted a new video showing the technology behind Touch Cover 2. Microsoft Distinguished scientist Stevie Bathiche from the Surface team shows off the enhancements to Touch Cover 2. The Touch Cover just got better this time. You now have illuminated keys and the Touch Cover 2 is thinner and lighter. Also the pressure-sensitive nature has been hugely improved as well. Lightweight, razor-thin keyboard and cover Innovative, 2.5 mm thin, pressure-sensitive keyboard responds to the touch of your fingertips. Twice as fast as onscreen typing. Smart enough to know when you are deliberately pressing a key, or just resting your hands. Doubles as a protective cover. Backlighting The keyboard is illuminated in low light, making it easy for you to use after the family (or the stranger sitting next to you in seat 37A) goes to sleep. Spill-resistant Smooth material repels moisture and dirt. To clean, simply wipe with ...

Talking to CNET, Qualcomm executive Horton said that Microsoft is a very capable organization, with lots of technologies,” but “didn’t hit a home run out of the gate on the very first product, but they’re working on it.”. Also Qualcomm believes in Microsoft’s vision of having both entertainment and productivity on a single device. Microsoft today sent out an updated statement to the media regarding the Surface RT 8.1 update issue. Microsoft pulled the Windows RT 8.1 update from Windows Store after few users raised concerns about their device getting bricked after the update. Microsoft then acknowledged the update situation and confirmed that they are working on a fix for the issue. According to Microsoft’s statement today, they are still fixing the issue and trying to release the update as soon as possible. “Based on our investigations of a situation customers have encountered updating to Windows RT 8.1, we can confirm that as of now this is a Windows update issue only affecting Surface RT customers. Microsoft Surface 2 reviews appeared online today. I’ve collected some conclusions from those reviews from popular websites. Mostly, the hardware received positive reviews with the exception that it is not pushing the boundaries. And the lack of apps in Windows Store was the most popular negative thoughts of Surface 2. Read the full reviews by clicking the title of the blogs/websites below. AnandTech: Surface 2 is a big step forward compared to Surface RT. The chassis looks awesome, the device is significantly quicker and battery life is appreciably better. The new display is much better than its predecessor (and so much better than what you get from most $449 PCs). The new touch/type covers see similarly major improvements. Surface 2 also benefits from the update to Windows RT 8.1, giving it a far more polished OS than what launched a year ago. The overall package is just a lot better ...
