Information about the Surface and accessories continues to trickle in as we approach the Surface launch event on September 23rd in New York.  This time we learned an interesting fact regarding the type covers.  When Microsoft originally launched the Surface last year, the touch covers were available in five different colors: magenta, white, cyan, red, and black.  There were also limited edition touch covers made available later on which included special designs on the back and some were even specific to certain markets, but in the same five colors.  The type cover was only available in black, however, Microsoft has seen a lot of user demand for type covers in different colors and had stated they would consider making colored type covers at a later time. Well it appears Microsoft will make the Type Cover available in multiple colors.  Sources have not confirmed what colors will be available exactly.  At ...

Every month on second Tuesday, Microsoft will release release patches and updates for its software and hardware lineups. Surface RT and Surface Pro devices were also getting these updates since launch and this month is an exception. There is no firmware update for both Surface RT and Surface Pro devices this month from Microsoft. I guess, Microsoft is working on delivering Windows 8.1 with fully optimized firmware for both these devices in October. When asked about the lack of updates this month, Microsoft commented the following to Neowin, Windows and Surface are periodically updated with new features and improvements as they become available, and they will continue to receive updates as needed. Product updates for Surface RT and Surface Pro will become less frequent as the products mature. This is the natural cycle for all devices. Are you waiting for Windows 8.1 update on your Surface device? Source: Surface RT, Surface ...

A new report claims Microsoft is building a docking station for the Surface Pro 2. The dock will allow for easy attachment of a keyboard and mouse.  There will be three USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port on the dock as well as the ability to attach to an external display via a mini DisplayPort. It will also feature a 1 Gbps Ethernet port, dedicated microphone and headphone/speaker ports. This will allow the Surface to be a complete desktop replacement for many users. It will be compatible only with Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2. Sources have not provided timing or price at this time, however speculation is that it may launch with the Surface Pro 2. Thurrott confirms many of the details: Pro only: It will be compatible with Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2, but not Surface RT or Surface 2. Design: The Docking Station is ...

Neowin has published a report on the supposed Surface 2 specs. As expected, Surface Pro 2 will be powered by Intel Haswell based CPU which will double its current battery life from 3-4 hours to 6-7 hours. While the look and feel of the device will remain the same, it seems Microsoft has refined the kickstand to some extent. Leaked Specs: Haswell-based Core i5 Will help increase battery life significantly RAM doubled from 4GB to 8GB. Not sure how much I believe this since it seems somewhat unnecessary and increases power consumption Device will look similar to the current Pro Microsoft has “refined” the kickstand Possibly one that is more robust stand that is stronger or one that offers alternative viewing angles (speculation) Price will remain the same Launches near the release of Windows 8.1 Microsoft is also planning a large marketing campaign during the launch period to promote the new ...

Microsoft today announced the availability of both Surface RT and Surface Pro devices in Taiwan. Even though Taiwan’s Pegatron makes Surface tablets for all parts of the world, their home country got Surface devices nearly after 9 months of the launch. According to Neowin, the new reduced price of Surface Pro is also live in Taiwan for a limited period. Intel recently previewed its upcoming energy-efficient versions of the Y-series Core processors that will consume as little as 4.5W power. These chips are expected to power fanless tablets and Intel so far has not revealed any upcoming tablet designs that will be using this chip. I expect Microsoft to refresh its Surface Pro device with this new chips for better battery performance. The 4.5W chips will have same 11.5W thermal design power rating as their 6W counter parts. There are obvious implications for the next-generation of Microsoft’s Surface Pro. It’s unclear whether Microsoft will wait until Broadwell to reduce the thickness of Surface Pro, or if it’ll go with a Y-series Haswell ULX part this year and release something that’s much thinner immediately. The challenges Microsoft would face there are similar to those Apple faced with the 2013 MacBook Air, namely Microsoft would have to be accepting of a CPU ...

As we previously reported Microsoft is continuing to expand its distribution for the Surface Pro: http://microsoft-news.com/microsoft-allows-resellers-to-start-selling-surfaces/  This combined with Microsoft’s educational offering discount and the early beginnings of the back to school buying season have overwhelmed Microsoft’s supply of the 64 GB Surface Pro and it is currently out of stock.  The Surface Pro 64Gb remains in high demand due to its lower price point than the 128GB model. We have reached out to Microsoft for comment and will update accordingly.   ...

Today is “Day Zero” at Microsoft’s TechEd New Orleans 2013 Conference. We previously reported, Microsoft is allowing TechEd attendees with a full conference pass to buy a SurfaceRT for $99 (Touch Cover included) and a Surface Pro for $399. I would not look at this deal as Microsoft shedding old inventory in preparation for a Surface refresh in the near future, but more of a “buy this and get ready for Windows 8.1″ Source: Mary-Jo Foley ...
