We previously reported that Microsoft will permanently drop the price of all Touch Covers from $119.99 to $79.99.  The SurfaceRT bundles (SurfaceRT + Black Touch Cover) will also be getting a permanent price reduction. The current price of either 32GB or 64GB and a bundled black Touch Cover for $449 and $549, respectively.  Starting on August 30th, whether you buy online or in the Microsoft Store, the bundle will cost $399 and $499, still saving you about $30. I think Microsoft should be able to sell more units at this price point. Source: WPCentral ...

Microsoft recently took nearly a billion dollar charge and reduced the price of the SurfaceRT to $350.  It appears the price point has helped move some units of the SurfaceRT with Walmart now out of stock of the device.  Walmart expects to have more units on hand within the week. Directions on Microsoft analyst Michael Cherry notes: The $900 million write-down also included parts and accessories, Cherry noted. And many forget that Apple is the master of tying up critical elements of components the company needs in order to build an adequate supply of consumer electronics. “When Microsoft decided to step into the world of building tablets I wondered how this differed from what they already built (mice, keyboards, and Xboxes),” said Cherry. “I assumed that a lot of money went into: a) buying parts; b) buying time in a plant; and c) building sub-components such as milling the metal ...

Microsoft has posted a new commercial on their official youtube account directly comparing the SurfaceRT to the iPad again.  The new commercial is similar to the ad released a few weeks back, but reflects the new $350 price of the SurfaceRT.  Microsoft recently took a $900 million charge related to lowering the price of the SurfaceRT and inventory adjustments on associated accessories. The ad continues the theme of showing how versatile the SurfaceRT is compared to the iPad.  Look for this commercial on a tv screen near you.  Personally, I’m quite enjoying these ads and I think the message will get through to the average consumer. A new report by Bloomberg claims that a new version of the SurfaceRT will be own its way soon sporting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processors instead of the existing Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset.  Nvidia may still be a supplier for some SurfaceRT tablets, but it is unclear at this time.  The Snapdragon 800 processor does include integrated LTE connectivity, so this may potentially be the first Surface tablet from Microsoft with 3G/4G mobile broadband.  Microsoft does have a great relationship with Qualcomm considering they are the exclusive supplier of processors for Windows Phone and a move to SurfaceRT on the same chips sounds highly plausible. Microsoft has recently been offering the SurfaceRT at discounted prices at their own TechEd conference for $99 with Touch Cover included.  It also recently announced a program where educational institutions can purchase the SurfaceRT for $199, significantly cheaper than buying iPads. The refreshed SurfaceRT may be ready ...

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft is planning on cutting the price of WinRT for small-sized (8 inch) tablets.  Microsoft originally restricted which OEMs would be allowed to produce WinRT tablets, but now Microsoft is looking to expand the number of OEMs producing WinRT tablets.  With more flexibility and cheaper WinRT software the OEMs will have a greater ability to compete against Android tablets and the iPad mini. It remains to be seen if the OEMs want to create a compelling WinRT tablet and will put the marketing muscle behind it to sell.  The SurfaceRT remains the most successful WinRT tablet, and an 8 inch version is expected to be unveiled later this month.  With Intel’s introduction of Haswell and a refreshed Atom processor, the problem of battery life is diminishing.  However, WinRT tablets will be cheaper and may be a compelling buy for consumers who do not need legacy software.   ...
