While many Microsoft fans are already playing with their Surface tablets, quite a few are not having such a good time, and are still waiting for theirs to be delivered. Many buyers have had no notification about the status of their orders, and quite a few are having their orders cancelled, without any real explanation. Mark from WP7.nl is one of the later, having received this email. I ordered mine on 10/18 and it was cancelled by Microsoft on 10/27: The following item(s) have been cancelled from your order: Product SKU: Z2S-00002 Product Name: Surface HD Digital AV Adapter Qty Ordered: 1 Reason for cancellation: Other Product SKU: 9HR-00026 Product Name: Surface with Windows RT Qty Ordered: 1 Reason for cancellation: Other While I think there is too much goodwill amongst the Microsoft community to call this a botched launch, Microsoft is in the unusual position of having product that ...

A WPArea reader managed to capture some pictures of the new Microsoft Surface Experience Centres which will be popping up all over the world. He writes: Since today in some German cities Microsoft’s new tablet computer, the surface is presented. Here in Berlin, there are several places where you can take a look. I was at the Motel One in the Kant Strasse 10, right near the Zoological Garden Berlin station. The Experience Center is located in the entrance hall. Only 2 units to try out were available. Guests at the Motel One can also rent a surface and try to rest. Therefore, additional devices. The tablet looks good and great is processed. The format may be a little getting used to. The weight is slightly larger than expected (although not more than others). It’s been fun to use the Surface and the gestures you fast on it. If you can ...

It seems like Apple has been a victim of their own success as their crowded stores turn away some potential customers. After being bitterly turned down by a seemingly ‘far too busy’ Apple store, customer Tonicia Abdur-Salaam turned to Microsoft to provide her school –Richfield’s Partnership Academy K-5 charter school- with the 24 desktop PC’s and a few laptops she was in urgent need of. Not only did Microsoft staff provide her with technical assistance and set up of the computers, but the friendly team threw in a couple Xbox 360’s free of charge. So far, 15 million people have experienced the friendly, insightful service the Microsoft stores have to offer.  In fact, twincities.com reports that 97% of surveyed customers said they preferred Microsoft products to Apple products.  Maybe this could have something to do with the fact that Apple stores are far too ‘packed’ according to Tim Nelson, president ...

We wrote earlier about international customers not receiving their Surface tablets when they expect.  It seems Microsoft is working very hard to quell any outrage, and is going so far as to offer buyers a £50 or $50 gift voucher for their trouble. Shawn has sent us in this email below: Dear Customer, Thanks again for pre-ordering your Surface online! As stated at the time of order, we expect customers in Canada to receive their Surface devices between Oct. 26 and Oct. 30. Today many Microsoft Surface buyers will be angered, not by the device but by its absence, as many international pre-orders end up being pushed back around the world. According to readers Microsoft is now revising the language of the pre-orders, saying delivery would be *from* the 26th, and that devices could arrive as late as the 30th October. Clearly the whole point of the pre-order system was to have the device arrive day and date with its release to the market, and while I do not expect riots in the streets, I think more than a few digital recycle bins will be tipped over. If there is any good news, it is that some Microsoft reps have said the delays were due to “huge demand” which is never a bad thing. To check where your Surface order currently is, use this handy tip from WPC. Just go to the FedEx ...

Last night Microsoft took the wrap of their New York Times Square store, in the presence of a large crowd who it seems could not wait to get their hands on some Windows RT Surface tablets. The above pictures were snapped by Steven Sinofsky, who is seems was pretty excited about the event. Neowin spoke to the staff there, and found that Microsoft may in fact keep the pop up store open after the holidays, depending on performance. The store does more than sell Surface tablets, also offering some laptops,  boxed copies of Windows 8, and will soon offer Windows Phone 8 handsets. Click the pictures to see more of the excitement. ...

CNET has pictures of what will likely be the first buyer of a Microsoft Surface tablet in the world. Chen Shi has started queuing at the Beijing Suning, the retail chain that will be selling the surface in China. Due to time zones they will be the first to officially start selling the tablet on the 26th. From the look of the stiles behind him Microsoft expects even bigger crowds to appear eventually. Microsoft has also started shipping the tablet to those who pre-ordered online, but there is growing concern that even those who ordered early will not be getting it on the big day, making Shi’s strategy not that mad after all. Via Weibo.com Thanks hengxiang32401 for the tip. ...

We have had a tip from a reader that their pre-order for the Microsoft Surface Touch Cover has been cancelled in Canada. Apparently others buyers have been similarly affected. Of course one possibility is that the supply may be severely over subscribed, but Microsoft has also told the angry punters that a system error may be to blame. Have any of our other readers been affected? Let us know below. Thanks Jed for the tip. ...

Anandtech has published an extremely detailed review of the the Microsoft Surface RT. The review covers issues such as the performance of the touch and type covers, battery life, and detailed bench marks of performance, application loading times and even WIFI speeds. After all that they conclude: Surface is the most flexible tablet I’ve ever used. Through two seemingly simple additions to the design (but incredibly complex to actually develop and implement), Microsoft took a tablet and turned it into something much more. If you’re frustrated by productivity limits of currently available tablets, Surface really seems to be the right formula for a solution. It’s important to note that Microsoft’s execution with Surface establishes the company as a competitive powerhouse in the mobile design market. I can only imagine what multiple revs of the design will give us, not to mention what could happen if Microsoft set its obsessive sights ...

The Verge have posted their review of the Microsoft Surface RT. They seems to like the hardware, except for the screen aspect ratio, which they found troublesome in many scenarios. Like others he also complained about the fixed angle of kickstand. They found battery life impressive and the device speedy, but complained of crashes in apps and of course the small selection of apps in general. He concluded: Maybe I say this too often, but I wanted to love this device. Actually, I wanted to love the Surface when I first saw it, before I even got my hands on the review unit. It made Windows 8 make sense in a way other products had not, and I could see a world where this kind of device was the only one I carried with me. Once I did get the review unit, I wanted to love it even more. And ...
