We have seen multiple reports in the past that Microsoft is planning to release a 8-inch Surface RT device this year. Digitimes today reported some more information about the upcoming device. They expect 8-inch Surface RT device will be launched in June with the price tag between US$249-299 and a 10.x-inch model as early as the third quarter of 2013. The 8-inch Surface will use touch panels supplied by Samsung Electronics and Nvidia-developed processors, and Taiwan-based ODM Pegatron will be responsible for production, the sources said. WSJ today reported that Microsoft is working on a 7-inch Surface tablet powered by Windows RT. After the success of iPad 10-inch tablet, the market seems to have moved towards 7-inch tablets like iPad mini, Google Nexus 7 and more. There are currently no Windows based devices in the category since the OS is not optimized for such devices. As previously reported, the upcoming update for Windows codenamed ‘Blue’ will optimize the Windows experience for 7′inch media tablets. The general manager of Microsoft Turkey, Tamer Özmen said Microsoft is planning to build a tablet research and development laboratory in Turkey to facilitate “Fatih”, the Turkish government’s tablet education project. “We are very keen to be involved in the project and we’re working on establishing the first research and development laboratory in Turkey”, he added. The move came as the Turkish government planned to replace the traditional blackboards and text books with electronic boards and tablet PCs as part of the Fatih education project. Microsoft started to sell their first Windows hardware Surface RT back in October last year. Initially the device was available only in Microsoft retail locations in US and then later expanded its availability to other retail stores and countries. We already saw reports that Microsoft Surface RT attracted a long line in Beijing, China back in October when it was first launched. It seems that the demand didn’t last for so many days, according to IDC, Microsoft Surface RT shipments has been low with only 30,000 units shipped during the fourth quarter. So, Surface accounted for only 1% of tablet market in China. IDC also reported that Microsoft was concerned less with boosting shipments, and instead used the device to demonstrate to PC vendors “how great” a Windows tablet could be, Chang said. Despite severe stock shortages and a high price the Microsoft Surface pro has still managed to make it onto Best Buy’s Bet Seller list, currently sitting in 4th spot behind much, much cheaper Amazon Kindle and Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Windows 8 tablet has been seeing severe supply shortages, but Microsoft has promised to restock this weekend, and is currently taking pre-orders for delivery later in the month.
