A year ago, the Surface was a surprise to many and Microsoft’s first serious foray into the hardware side of the PC market.  In many ways, this was a situation Microsoft was forced into.  The OEMs had stopped innovating years ago focusing on squeezing the maximum profits and loading their “PCs” with crapware to further worsen the experience.  In the meantime Apple had been seriously innovating in the hardware space, with Google also looking into getting in the game as well. The devices and services strategy is starting to pay off, even if there was an initial $900 million blunder.  The OEMs are finally starting to put out decent devices, and most are now touchscreen, even if it is a year later than it should have been.  The Surface has set the standard of a what a PC can be.  While the distribution channels were not ready a year ago, the Surface ...

Delta Air Lines is equipping its 11,000 pilots with electronic flight bags using the Microsoft Surface 2 tablet.  Device rollout to pilots flying the Boeing 757 and Boeing 767 fleets will start later this year and all Delta cockpits are projected to be paperless by the end of 2014.  The Surface 2 will run on the Windows RT 8.1 platform and provide flight crews real-time access to essential tools and the most up-to-date flight-related resources including key charts, reference documents, and checklists while saving the airline $13 million per year in fuel and associated costs.  “Delta’s electronic flight bag running on Surface 2 continues the technological strides Delta has been making to give our crews the best tools to keep them flying safely and efficiently,” said Capt. During the second generation Surface launch event held last week, Microsoft announced the Surface Remix Project which showed how you could click in a specially designed Touch Cover that let you remix your favorite songs and share them with the world. Even though it is limited to music for now, it shows that productivity can go various other ways, not just click in keyboards. Microsoft realized that this concept has a great potential and they visited Art Center College of design to meet students for a three day workshop where students were asked to imagine different blades concepts. Microsoft refers the Cover you click in to Surface as blades. The Surface Remix Project has a music blade and there could be many other blades for various other purposes. Now let me rewind the clock back a little over three weeks. As we thought about what else we could click in to a Surface, we thought it would ...

Microsoft first announced Windows on ARM project 2 years back. Since then, they branded it Windows RT and started licensing it to OEMs. In fact, Microsoft itslef has become Windows RT OEM. Since its launch in October 2012, Windows RT devices are struggling to find a place in the fastest growing tablet market. Asus and Samsung discontinued their Windows RT efforts soon after the poor market reception. Lenovo was selling Yoga 11 Windows RT devices until it released Yoga 11S Intel based device. Dell and Microsoft continued selling XPS 10 and Surface RT devices respectively. Today, Dell has also announced that XPS 10 product is unavailable. And they have suggested Intel based Latitude 10 as a comparable system. So, the only Windows RT tablet you can buy in the market right now is Microsoft Surface RT. In the near future, Surface 2 from Microsoft is getting released. Other than that, I don’t think any other Windows ...

Surface Mini Concept Render Just few hours ago, we reported some new information regarding the upcoming Surface ‘mini’ tablet from Microsoft. There is a new information from ZDNet that Surface Mini won’t be released until Sprint 2014. According to Mary Jo Foley, the Surface Mini is coming, but not in calendar 2013 and she expects Surface Mini in early 2014. She also reported that the Surface Mini is going to come preloaded with a Windows 8.1 update, that is codenamed “Spring 2014 GDR.” The Spring 2014 GDR for Windows 8.1 will align with Windows Phone “Blue,” which may or may not be called Windows Phone 8.1 when it ships, according to my sources. Whatever it’s called, it will be the first “major” update for Windows Phone since Microsoft rolled out Windows Phone 8 in fall 2012. If the new cross-divisional operating system division at Microsoft can pull this off, Microsoft will ...

Microsoft Surface team today did a Reddit AmA on new Surface devices. I’ve collected some interesting information from the whole discussion. Read the part 1 of the same here. Part 2 content, Whether Surface Pro 2 just has updated CPU from Intel ? – To get the full benefit, it’s not just a case of switching out the CPU. For Surface Pro 2, we complexly redesigned the motherboard, performed system level tuning, upgraded to LPDDR3 RAM & low power SSD, and tuned the firmware and drivers. Touch Cover pressure sensitive nature – Hey this is StevieB. the touchcover 2 pressure sensors have 1024 pressure levels as well. We will try to post a demo video of how the pressure levels look.. it is pretty coo. to see (done via ...

I think the dancing videos are finally starting to make sense to me, they were just a year too early.  The Verge reports: That’s the Surface Remix Project, which is part modified Touch Cover and part Garage Band-style DJ app. It’s a simple, fun tool to play with, letting you create your own customizable controller, chop up your MP3s, and spin to your heart’s content. Avicii I am not (even with the Remix Project’s help), but I was easily layering screaming Linkin Park vocals over a booming kick drum in no time. The Remix Project Cover, with 16 numbered buttons, three sliders, and eight keys for volume and control, is impressive — it was fast and responsive, even as I slid up and down on the sliders. Part of that is no doubt due to the Surface 2 attached to it (the Cover also works with the Surface Pro and Surface ...
