Following Sony, another Japanese OEM Toshiba has announced their restructuring plans around their PC business. Toshiba will now withdraw from consumer PC selling business in certain markets and will focus on selling PCs for the business alone. Toshiba will accelerate the restructuring of its PC business to focus on the profitable B2B field,  and to control volatility in the B2C business by significant downsizing measures, including withdrawal from certain B2C markets. These moves are expected to support the business in securing consistent profit in the future. In the B2B market, Toshiba will continue to cultivate new customers and businesses. At IFA, Toshiba announced an ultra-cheap Windows tablet that will go on sale for just $120. This tablet is now available for order from Toshiba in the US and will be shipped on 25th of September. At Computex, Nick Parker, Microsoft corporate vice president, demonstrated the latest Windows hardware devices which will be available in new lower price points and new markets. For the first time, Microsoft revealed Toshiba’s upcoming 7” Encore tablet. This will be one of the first 7-inch Windows device that will come to market. The tablet is being co-developed by Microsoft and Toshiba and in close collaboration with Intel, Goodix and AMI. It will be available in the coming months at a value-driven price point. PCs have long been known for their great value.  This is part of the reason Microsoft was so successful.  Affordable PCs were produced at high scale and sold at a high volume allowed Microsoft to gain a large amount of marketshare in the early days of the PC industry.  Of course in an effort to make more money on low margins, build quality on PCs suffered along with a ruined experience with the introduction of crapware.  There was practically no innovation from the OEMs after laptops became mainstream.   The higher end of the PC market typically appealed to gamers.  The two leaders in that market , Alienware and VooDoo were bought by Dell and HP, respectively. Most consumers are familiar with “2-in-1″ PCs, which can either be a tablet or laptop.  But Toshiba has stepped it up a notch and unveiled a 5-in-1 PC concept.  Toshiba calls it a “shape-shifting” PC and it has three parts, a screen, keyboard and kickstand.  The kickstand contains the motherboard and the three parts can be arranged for different usage scenarios. As expected the PC take the form of a traditional laptop.  It can also take the form of a tablet, one with the keyboard detached and one with it folded back.  Two other modes include a “Presentation/TV” mode that involves using the kickstand, and a “Canvas” mode that lets the user flip the attached keyboard 270 degrees, making the device better for drafting with a stylus. Toshiba Kirabook already had top of the line specs including 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Intel HD graphics and the 13.3-inch PixelPure display with 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution.
