For the seventh straight month, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has beat Xbox One in sales in the US. Even the increasing of console sales due to price cut was not enough for Microsoft to catch up with PS4. Despite having a solid platform for both games and entertainment apps, Microsoft’s console sales is not up to the mark due to poor marketing. Recently, Sony announced that they have sold over 10 million consoles to consumers to date which is almost double of what they announced back in February. Also Sony reported that PS4 “led the month for next generation software sales by a considerable margin,” and that “more than half of total next generation software sales” were for PS4. Find the list of top games in sales for the month of July below, 1.The Last of Us (PS4, PS3) 2.Minecraft (360, PS3) 3.FIFA 14 (360,PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Vita) 4.Watch Dogs ...

Microsoft last week announced that Xbox One users in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain will be able to experience premium live TV features on Xbox One, such as the ability to access your favorite shows and channels with the sound of your voice through the OneGuide, with the new Xbox One Digital TV Tuner.  The new digital TV tuner will also support free-to-air DVB-T, DVB-T2 and DVB-C television standards. The most notable thing in this announcement is that this device is not coming to the US. Also, it may not be coming to the US anytime soon due to licensing restrictions by TV providers such as Comcast. Microsoft provided the following statement regarding this issue, The ability to stream TV content to mobile devices depends on a number of factors related to licensing. This feature is launching first in the UFIGS markets, where the Xbox Digital TV Tuner will ...

Yesterday, we reported that a federal judge in the US ruled Thursday that Microsoft must hand over e-mails stored on an overseas server to US authorities. Following a two-hour court hearing in New York, U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska said the warrant lawfully required the company to hand over any data it controlled, regardless of where it was stored. We already know that companies like AT&T, Verizon, Apple, Cisco and others filed their support for Microsoft’s argument in the court. Today Verizon and AT&T responded to court’s initial verdict, Verizon’s statement, “We respectfully disagree with the judge’s opinion for the reasons stated in our General Counsel’s prior blogs (here, and here) and in our amicus brief (PDF). We support Microsoft’s challenge to the decision. “These matters are very fact-sensitive, and while we have not received a request like this one before, if we were to receive a warrant from the United States ...

Microsoft offices in China were raided today by Chinese government officials for unknown reasons. China’s State Administration for Industry & Commerce made the visits to Microsoft offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. Yesterday, no exact reason was specified by Chinese government regarding this sudden investigation. Today, a Chinese regulator confirmed that they are conducting an anti-monopoly investigation into Microsoft over its Windows OS. Generally, anti-monopoly investigations are done when some company dominates the market by practicing unethical business practices. Even though Microsoft’s Windows is so popular in China, Microsoft’s revenue from China is almost negligible. Former CEO Steve Ballmer noted in one of this speech that Microsoft earns less revenue in China than in Netherlands. Even if found guilty, Microsoft may see fines of 1-10 percent of its China revenue which I think will be less $400 million for sure. Source: Reuters ...

Chitika Ad Network today released their report on the distribution of web usage among leading tablet devices for early July 2014 in the U.S. and Canadian tablet. The results are not so encouraging for Microsoft. Despite the fire sale of Surface RT tablets followed by Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 in the market, Microsoft tablets accounted for only 1.4% of the total market. When you compare this to last year’s numbers, Microsoft has almost tripled it from 0.5%. But, you have to compare this with the market leader Apple which dominates the list with 78% usage share. Even though these numbers may not be highly accurate, this report shows that Microsoft has a very long way to go in tablet market in the coming years. Hopefully, Microsoft will be able to bounce back into market with cheaper and more affordable tablets from the OEMs and flagship tablets from itself. What do ...

For the sixth straight month, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has beat Xbox One in sales in the US. Even the doubling of console sales was not enough for Microsoft to catch up with PS4 which shows that Xbox One sales were really bad in the month of May. Despite having a solid platform for both games and entertainment apps, Microsoft’s console sales is not up to the mark due to unfocused marketing team. The total sales of consoles and portables combined was $736.4 million, up 24 percent from $593.5 million in sales during the same period last year. Also, combined sales of Xbox One and PS4 are over 80 percent higher than the combined totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 “Sales of launch titles in June 2014 did not compare favorably to those launched in June 2013, which included the PS3 exclusive The Last of Us, along with Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Leaf, ...

Every July 4th on Independence Day, there will be a spike in people across the US who search for “fireworks” on Bing. Microsoft Bing team decided to study the data to get new insights about it. For that, they created a “firework index” which is the number of searches containing the phrase “fireworks” divided by the total number of searches (for a given location on a given day) and they take this index as correlating to the general level of interest in fireworks. Find the result below. The striking thing you can notice is that southern portion of the country has a relatively mild interest in the fireworks. The least interested fireworks enthusiasts call Louisiana and Mississippi home. The Northeast appears to be home to the most rabid firework fans.  The most fervent firework searchers can be found in Rhode Island and New Hampshire. On the west coast, Washington State stands out ...

Last week, we reported that Sony’s PS4 dominated the Xbox One for the fourth month in a row. New numbers from NPD revealed that Microsoft only sold 115,000 units of their Xbox One console for the month of April. Also, Microsoft announced a new cheaper SKU for Xbox One that will not include Kinect sensor and will cost $399 which is same as that of Sony’s PS4. Microsoft’s this move was to directly compete with Sony on price and it seems that it may work out as expected. GameStop during their earnings meet revealed that they are seeing strong demand for Xbox One after the price drop. “I definitely think we’re already seeing in our stores with our reservation program as well as dialogue with PowerUp Rewards [members that] there’s a stronger demand as a result of the price drop,” Bartel said. “The good news for us is… we’ll sell ...

Guardian last year reported that Microsoft handed the NSA access to unencrypted Skype and Outlook.com messages. It said that Microsoft collaborated closely with US intelligence services to allow users communications to be intercepted. Microsoft responded to the allegations saying that they comply with US laws. The following was the response from Microsoft regarding Outlook.com messages data, First, while we did discuss legal compliance requirements with the government as reported last week, in none of these discussions did Microsoft provide or agree to provide any government with direct access to user content or the ability to break our encryption. Second, these discussions were instead about how Microsoft would meet its continuing obligation to comply with the law by providing specific information in response to lawful government orders. Today, Greenwald via his new books has revealed the documents which shows the discussion Microsoft and the US government had regarding PRISM program. It ...

Microsoft officially ended its support for Windows XP last week. More that 25% of the internet connected PCs are still running Windows XP and the vast majority of them are from enterprises and government agencies. Last we reported that UK government has signed a deal with Microsoft to provide Windows XP support and security updates across the whole UK public sector for 12 months after regular support for the operating system ends on 8 April.  The agreement is worth £5.548m (over $7.6 million), and covers critical and important security updates for Windows XP, Office 2003 and Exchange 2003, all of which have reached end of life in Microsoft’s normal product cycles. In a similar way, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be paying Microsoft millions for an extra year of security patches. “Now we find out that you’ve been struggling to come up with $30 million to finish migrating ...

IDC today reported that worldwide PC shipments totaled 73.4 million units in the first quarter of 2014 (1Q14), a decline of -4.4% year on year as a result of continuing weakness in consumer and emerging market segments. Windows XP was one of the main reasons for growth in commercial market segments as Microsoft is ending the support for OS. Lenovo maintained its lead in total worldwide PC shipments, followed by HP and Dell. Acer and Asus are the biggest losers in this segment as they are transitioning towards tablets and mobile devices. “Worldwide PC shipments have now declined for eight consecutive quarters as a result of shifting technology usage and competition (notably with tablets & smartphones) as well as economic pressures (including high unemployment, slow growth & investment, tight credit, and currency fluctuations) related to the Great Recession, sovereign debt crises, and their related impact on international trade,” said Loren Loverde, Vice ...

During a Reddit AmA on new Surface devices back in September 2013, Surface team confirmed that they are working on LTE version of Surface devices. Why was LTE not included on neither Surface nor Surface Pro? We didn’t talk about it today, but Surface 2 will be launching an awesome LTE SKU early next year! Looks like the time has come. A Surface device with AT&T LTE has now passed through the FCC which again confirms that we are closer to launch. We can expect the device either in March or April. FCC published the Surface with LTE documents just today and since it comes with confidentiality request, we have very less details on the device. Neowin noted in the testing report that the device is running Windows RT OS. “EUT driver software installed during testing was Windows RT8.1 Preview Build 943”. I guess the device should be identical to current Surface 2 with an added option for cellular. What do ...
