Microsoft today released a new video ad for the upcoming release of Windows 8. Even though the ad does not explicitly mentions Windows 8.1, it clearly shows the improvements made as part of the upcoming Windows 8.1 update. A new video got leaked today which shows off Xbox One dashboard in action. Even though Microsoft showed off Xbox One dashboard couple of times during press events, they didn’t fully reveal it. This video shows some of the new dashboard’s feature such as the ability to switch between games and the dashboard home without any delay. Microsoft Research has had a long history of looking at bringing static images to life.  A few months back MSR released an app called BLINK for WP8 and recently Cliplets for Windows 8.  Cliplets reanimates a portion of a scene based on user-specified regions and time intervals. The emphasis is on creative control—creating contrasting juxtapositions of frozen and dynamic content.  Think of the dynamic (animated) images in the newspapers shown in the Harry Potter films.  Or the Nokia Cinemagraph the app, same basic concept.  All these apps output .gif files. With today’s mobile devices, users can find shooting high-definition video as easy as snapping a photograph. The Windows Blue update to Windows 8 is expected some time in the middle to the end of this year, and Stephen Chapman from MSFTkitchen has managed to dig up this video presentation of an updated version of the Fresh Paint app built for the OS. New in this version is the interaction of watercolor with other medias (oil, pencil, etc.), wet or dry and the the ability to import an image from anywhere, then transpose it to a watercolor painting you can interact with. WPArea.de reports the Surface RT tablet is coming to Germany on the 14th February and will likely be carried by Saturn and Media Markt. The news was announced by Microsoft already last week, but WPArea reports that television and other media ads, such as the one above and below, have now started appearing, suggesting a real push is underway. Analysts suggest Microsoft has only sold around 1 million or less Surface tablets so far, with Microsoft blaming this on limited distribution. Microsoft’s premier racing game, Forza, is getting a new expansion pack next week. The Forza Horizons Rally expansion pack will bring 5 new rally-tuned cars, new stages and a new co-driver system for rally races. Cars included in the Forza Horizon Rally pack include the ’92 Toyota Celica GT-Four RC ST185, the 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR, the 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, the 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth, and lastly the 1982 Lancia 037 Stradale.
