According to the report from WSJ, Asus has dropped its plans to sell its first Dual OS device Transformer Book Duet TD300 due the pressure from both Microsoft and Google. Early this year, Asus announced the Transformer Book Duet TD300, first convertible device that runs both Android and Windows 8.1. You can switch between them with push of a single button. The patented ASUS technology powered Instant Switch offers many performance and productivity benefits over other dual-OS solutions, such as fast, smooth and seamless switching and the ability to resume each OS from where the user left off. As it does not use OS virtualization, Instant Switch also allows each OS to harness the full power of Intel’s latest processor technology.   We have seen fingerprint scanners in portable systems since last decade. Lot of laptops and nowadays even smartphone embeds this technology for user authentication. Fujitsu is now trying to replace this fingerprint scanners with Palm Vein sensors in its business laptops in coming months. It almost looks like the fingerprint scanner, but the main difference is that you don’t have to touch it. You should place your palm above the sensor as you can see in the image above to authenticate your device. Also this system requires a live hand to make the authentication, so someone can’t cut off your hand and use it for unlocking your device. Fujitsu believes that palm vein sensing is around a thousand times more secure than conventional biometric methods. Hopefully, we will see them in more devices in the future. Source: Engadget ...

The golden coins remain hidden in our Rainbows theme, but all the vivid colors of the spectrum are on full display in rainbows shining over landscapes from Wales to Madagascar.   For those interested in a single-image experience, try this dramatic new wallpaper in which a rainbow arcs over the lush green Irish landscape, from photographer Michael Poecki. Last month we reported about a new Windows 8.1 Update 1 build that got leaked which seemed to be a new SKU from Microsoft. The leaked build was named Windows 8.1 with Bing. There were reports that Windows 8.1 with Bing is Microsoft’s experimentation with monetization of low-cost devices with low licensing costs. Windows 8.1 ADK got leaked today and it provides us the information about the new Windows 8.1 with Bing. Windows 8.1 with Bing is targeted towards low-cost devices in which OEMs won’t be able to change the default search engine. However, users can manually change it if they want. This is a clever way to prevent Google from striking search deals with Windows OEMs. Windows 8.1 with Bing Windows 8.1 with Bing is a new Windows edition that helps OEMs add Windows to low-cost devices while driving end user usage of Microsoft Services such as Bing and OneDrive. ...

Gartner today released their worldwide tablet market share for 2013 in which a total of 195.4 million units were sold. Apple’s iOS share fell to 36% while Android took 61.9% of the market, thanks  to low-end small screen tablets attracting first time buyers. Microsoft Windows had 2.1% of the market with a total of 4 million units sold in 2013. Microsoft has a long way to go in tablet market to catch up to Apple and Google. In 2013, Microsoft’s tablet volumes improved but share remained small. Despite Microsoft now acting more rapidly to evolve Windows 8.1, its ecosystem still failed to capture major consumers’ interest on tablets. “To compete, Microsoft needs to create compelling ecosystem proposition for consumers and developers across all mobile devices, as tablets and smartphones become key devices for delivering applications and services to users beyond the PC,” said Ms. Cozza. Microsoft enjoys better shares in ...

The market share increased by just 0.10% to reach 10.68% worldwide.  More specifically, Windows 8 fell 0.25 percentage points (from 6.63 percent to 6.38 percent), while Windows 8.1 gained 0.35 percentage points (from 3.95 percent to 4.30 percent). Also, Windows 7 continued to lose market share at very slow rate. Overall, Windows market share is up to 90.73 percent from 90.72 percent, OS X was flat in its market share with 7.68% and Linux captured 1.48% market share. Another interesting thing to note in the stats is about Windows XP. A decade old OS is still holding about 29.53% market share worldwide. Actually, Windows XP gained from 29.23 percent to 29.53 percent. It is strange to see people feel reluctant to update their PC even after the extended ...

As per previous reports, Microsoft is set to release Windows 8.1 Update 1 to users sometime in April. Paul Thurrott has today confirmed that Windows 8.1 Spring update will hit MSDN on April 2 and Windows Update on April 8th. The timing seems to be interesting as Microsoft is planning to release them on the last day of Build developer conference. We previously reported that Windows 8.1 Update 1 allows you to pin your Windows Store apps to the taskbar. Apart from that, the pinned Windows Store apps in taskbar also supports thumbnail previews. Also pinning supported modern apps to task bar allows you to enjoy Jump lists and media controls features as well. Dustin Ingalls, group program manager for Windows security and identity team spoke with Computerweekly on the problem of ineffective authentication that relies on usernames and passwords. Microsoft has joined other industry leaders to define standards for the next gen authentication system. “From a business objective standpoint, all the players are well aligned and agree that passwords have been problematic for a number of years and are well past their time,” The only way to solve this problem is to get all the major players at the same table and the Fido alliance has the potential of making that happen,” He highlighted the fact that usability is critical from the start according to the Fido Alliance principles, and Microsoft is looking to work with the alliance to achieve this objective along with all the ...

Last week we reported about a new Windows 8.1 Update 1 build that got leaked which seemed to be a new SKU from Microsoft. This Windows 8.1 build: 9600.17024.winblue_gdr_s14sku_partner.140214-1700 was named Windows 8.1 with Bing. With Windows 8.1, Microsoft has started integrating Bing directly into the OS which might raise anti-trust issues in EU. We guess it then that this new SKU might be targeted towards EU where Microsoft might be selling Windows 8.1 with Bing instead of just Windows 8.1 branding. Today, Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet reported that this Windows 8.1 with Bing SKU might be the way Microsoft will offer OS for free to OEMs. This new SKU, from what my contacts are saying, is key to Microsoft’s experimentation with monetization. I hear this SKU has only minor differences from the current Windows 8.1 SKUs, but that it may be a kind of placeholder for the future when consumer operating ...
